So I am considering the RP-PVP server for a more immersive experience but I’m afraid I have no actual idea on how to do it.
I’ve read things like, you use emotes more often and talk as your character which is fine but I’ve also read things like you have to walk in cities with your weapons unequipped etc.
Maybe I’m thinking about it too much but I can’t find that much about it.
Can someone also address how the backstories work or possible addons people use, trade/gen chat, and just anything I’ve missed. Thanks <3
Things like that are up to you and how deeply you wish to play your own character.
RP’ing can be as deep as you writing complex backstories and descriptions for your character and how he/she fits into the lore, or as simple as you going it alone and playing the game slowly while RP’ing the game in your head, imagining yourself immersed in the world as you go.
RP guilds often have their own elaborate story lines to play out, which you can take part in, if you wish. Or you can sit on the sidelines and watch, if the guild allows. It’s your choice.
Oh, and the add-ons. The add-ons simply allow you to fill out information about your character. People can see basics with a mouseover, and if they right-click they can read more deeply what you’ve filled out. Some people put in their entire backstories and full character descriptions.
This link may help to some extent. It even has suggestion links for how to roleplay individual races!
In answer to your question though - two points.
You can be on an RP realm without being obligated to RP. So first of all, don’t feel pressured. Nobody can force you to act in any way. That said, it’s considered rude to interrupt or interfere with people who ARE roleplaying.
In terms of how to actually roleplay, you use /e and /s mainly, and essentially act as if your character was a real person within Azeroth. /e is good for custom emotes, e.g.
Placeholder: [Say]. I’d say you’re looking lively today, but you’re an undead.
Sarestha: [emote] sighs, and rolls her eyes in response to Placeholder’s comment.
Really the simplest explanation I can give is treat your character like a person, and interact with others in the way that they would. One of the most important things you can do is flesh out a backstory - this adds context to your character and helps unpack their motives.
Don’t fear obligations though. You are not obliged to RP in any particular way. So if you’re in an RP mood, sure, you might walk in the cities like a normal person might. But nobody is gonna rage at you if you’re out of character and running around.
As for the weapons rule, I’ve never even heard that one, and I’ve been RPing since MoP.
Just in case you are interested in doing roleplay, I’d take a look at the history of WoW via Wowpedia (not wowwiki) and read the story of the Warcraft universe up to the begining of World of Warcraft.
Lore is a big part of shaping your character, but people tend to bend it a little bit here or there concerning WoW RP.
The Roleplay and Story fourm is a good primer along with visiting any of the RP realm fourms/sites they offer too!
It depends on you. Some folks create a detailed backstory and play thei r character according to their motivations. They talk as that character all the time and act like that character would all the time. Others just go and roleplay in a given area by talking differently or doing a lot of emotes such as : “so and so walks over and nods at you in greeting.” etcetera. The level of immersion and interaction is up to you.
Your character is a part of the world around you. They’re more than just an avatar for you, the player. The only difference is you don’t have to have them eat or sleep, unless you want to. It might drive home the immersion factor, or it might be an annoyance to some people who just want to create their own epic stories.
Treat it as cooperative storytelling where there is no single writer - like a game of D&D with a lot more people. The important thing is that you’re not obligated to do it unless you absolutely want to - but if you don’t want to, please respect the people who actually do.
I was also thinking of dabbling in the RP and was curious about the etiquette of RP severs. I’ve heard something about naming your character following specific guidelines but I’m not sure what they are. Is this true? Anything else we should know or any other suggestions?
P.s. don’t mean to hijack your thread but I didn’t think it made sense to start a new one for this, as it’s related.
Yes there used to be name rules on RP servers. Like you could not be XXXDeadthingXXX. But it has been so long since I have seen those rules if they are still on the books they are never enforced anymore. But you used to think you had a good name and log in one day needing to rename your character because someone did not think your name was good enough or fit in with lore and reported you. They have not said though if they were indeed putting the name rules back in as it would take a lot of gm support.
Good Morning , Citizens of Warcraft, your world shall quickly becoming to a end as millions of Horde (Free players) Come crashing threw the dark portal. No Mercy will be given to your pathetic Alliance (Payplayers) Lives!
Firstly as a Member of the Dark Council (United Free Gamers) we have Declared it is time to remove your Ignorant Socially Ackward Lives. (Paying for games)
Replacing it with Glorious Combat and Death! (PVP)
The Fundimentals of your Existence (Dancing Naked in Goldshire)
Will be Tested and your way of life (Eating potato Chips and being Fat) Shall be over, None of you shall stand to the might of the Horde. (Free Gamers)
I’ve done a lot of RP, back in the day when I made areas for a MUD. Most of the time players would intentionally take the time to speak in character when they needed to do something. Mainly for self RP types of things, which are things they don’t necessarily interact with other players.
A good example would be like cooking something in game.
Like you are fishing, and you wanna level up cooking since your bags are becoming full right. So you might take the time to type out, either in /say or even maybe specific area channel something along the lines of…
/say “Wow, my bags are becoming more full by the minute. The fish are sure biting today.”
/emote looks down into inventory to confirm his haul.
/say “A good time to cook up some of these while they are still fresh”
/emote begins to prepare a cooking fire.
[Then you click on your cooking fire icon to make one]
Now of course, that is just a small idea with a solo person on their own. Of course that would intensify with more people and things of that nature.
I would sum it up by saying RP is super fun, and can be challenging but will take longer to progress in the content due to the fact that you will spend more time emoting, speaking for exposition and things of that nature.
It also depends on how deep you wanna get in it. You can be super causal and just set up some fun emotes to interact with ppl or seriously make your own backstory based on lore and basically make your own adventure.
I do light RP even on a straight PVP server, just no one really cares LOL. We all trying to get 60, max profs, get BiS and then kill each other for honor points.
/me Thinks your all paying for a game you really are no good at, which shows lack of ability not even closely comparable to Free player mentality and skill which Free players destroy paying gamers.
yeah I love rp servers its the rp factor that makes the game fun and exciting, PVP is great to and RP-PVP is the best you get the best of both worlds with PVP players who enjoy to troll each other while still commiting to proper storyline inspirations.
Gotcha, gotcha. It’s hard to gauge sometimes on the forums, sometimes i wish we could all just webchat with this…which would be SOOOOO funny and choatic.
yes infact, free players give a lot of support to cash shops, buy forcing would be gamers who pay to , spend more to compete and accept the challenge vs skill, this is why the wow community even got a cash shop, as paying gamers became enraged they couldn’t out skill other more advanced gamers who combind Strategy and Skill.
When pay to play pvps lose they spend more, anything to get a edge over free players. That is how Free players raise cash sales and why blizzard is losing money, because the Desire to become better gamers has left the building and now your only facing other spenders who have got so bad with this nerfed wow experience.
I’m more of a lite RP player myself.
No backstory, no RP addons.
I do choose my name to fit with my character.
I do more emotes.
I may add some RP elements when I talk in chat.
Let the RP come to you over time as you play your character.
You may love pvp and become the defender of towns like Southshore or Lakeshire. Add that element to your chat talk.
If you like selling your profession stuff in IF add the merchant element to your chat talk.
There was an Orc who made his game play answering calls for help from world defense.
There was an Undead who sold the various colored shirts in Org and he would say "Shirts by xxxx, any color, any style. Don’t be caught wearing any old shirt. " He became pretty popular too.
