Zul had ambitions. Old god is bad but the idea behind it is right.

His ambition wasn’t in line with reality; by the point of that meeting the Troll nations had been in decline for years and uniting under his half baked leadership wouldn’t have saved them from the horde and alliance. Further you can’t really get around how he was effectively a puppet for Ghuun so long term even if his plan had worked it just would have meant the great butthole of azeroth would have spread out of control.

What did he succeed at?

The dark spear have gotten stronger and stronger while whole Troll nations have collapsed. This happened because he chose addaptation and change over clinging to old traditions and lamenting how things were.

Being Horde means you become passive. The alliance is the protagonists of the game. And in Legion it showed hard. The Horde has no future with Shadowlands over. All we can do is for the alliance to make the final push and claim dominion over the entire world. Which was always the goal of Blizzard.

• first we get defeated in Bfa and the Zandalari are forced into peace by the Horde council.
• Rastakhan dies to make way for his feminist token mary sue daughter.
• Whenever Blizzard wants to raise the stakes they kill some Horde lore characters.
• Thrall and Baine in Shadowlands were utterly useless. All the meat of the story went to Anduin and Tyrande.
• Vol’jin is coming back despite nobody wants him and Rezan being a far more interesting character.
• Dragonflight. Once again Baine is useless and Bovan dies.
• Still Dragonflight. They proped up two blood elves who get killed in the very first questline they get introduced in. See point 3.
• Legion. Horde might not exist in this plot outside of Sylvanas trying to get the Val’kyr.
• WoD. Instead of teaming up with the Iron Horde we aid the alliance to kill all the legendary Orc heroes of the past for another time. Now Yrel rules Draenor and the Mag’har are refugees.
• Shadowlands again. Sylvanas gets sent to super hell for community service and Garrosh is turned to soul ash. Two icons of the Horde story gone forever.
• the Orc heritage questline is by far the worst of them all. They gather a bunch of forgettable Orc NPCs nobody cares about and try to make them look like a big deal. The nod towards Grommash and Doomhammer is insulting at best.

It is a core mechanic of the game. You can’t just remove that. Lore wise the three alliances in ESO also still exist they just stopped the war until the Daedra are defeated.

He is just dealing with himself in a self finding mission. That takes time. Once he is back the lore will orbit around him just like in MoP, Bfa and Shadowlands.

Actually the Horde, up until SL. had the more interesting quests (especially for races) when compared to the Alliance who generally tended to meander through, following the same leaders who are all being nice to each other (at least until BfA when Tyrande had her hissy fit).

Sorry to say this as the greatest Horde supporter but it is true. The alliance are saints compared to the Horde. They never committet any genocide. And Taurajo was retconed in the Jaina novel as a miscommunication from the alliance general who first ordered the fire bombing. And had the conscripts who tried to plunder the place arrested.
