That was actually a fairly recent change in the grand scheme of things. Apparently the Haunting Memento buff always being active caused some issues with entity spawning.

That’s because the you’d always have the shade following you regardless of situation. Thus, whenever you were flying it would spawn right behind you, fall until it despawned, and then instantly respawn again forever.
I don’t really know. I never found the shade thingy very interesting, so I never carried the item with me or cared much about the change.

It’s been forever since I carried mine around, but years ago it used to interfere with using the barber shop too. Not sure if this is still the case.

not the same thing as Haunted Memento which everyone seems to be talking about.
