Okay, I’m under the impression that raising dead people against their will as undead minions is like, supposed to be objectively a morally bad thing to do. Like, the game definitely gives this message, right?
And you could argue that death knights got their singular undead minion before they broke free from the will of the Lich King and it just stuck around with them. Sure.
But then how do you morally square the ability Army of the Dead? I’m pretty sure Death Knights would for sure have to be raising dead people against their will as undead minions in order for this ability to make sense lorewise. But isn’t doing that why the Lich King was evil? Like, is that not objectively an evil thing to do? How does it make sense then that death knights who raise the dead against their will are our allies?
Canonically our characters don’t do half of what the mechanics show, unless it’s in a quest or cinematic, best to write it off as OOC noncanon. In-universe portals are not as common as Mage players and the Magetower make them seem, Hearthstones aren’t handed out like candy and are insinuated to be costly to create, and DKs have a hard time raising the dead themselves, especially without Bolvar’s Lich King status… it took shattered Frostmourne as the Prince’s blades for the Deathlord to raise the Horsemen, and the Cult of the Damned/valkyre raises most of Bolvar’s new troops, they always have for the Lich King.
They raise lesser undead. Like the lower tier, mindless, point and shoot zombies. Or they just tap into felled members of Cult of the Damned. I believe those guys signed up for that kinky sh.
Ghouls don’t have any kind of consciousness do they? For all intents and purposes it’s just a reanimated corpse. No different than picking up a femur and using it as a club, imo.
They barely do. You can tell because of the ghoul DK vendors that can barely speak. They are usually assigned the simplest of tasks.
During the Forsaken quests in Vanilla, there’s an undead lady that feels the chill of death and is slipping into a mindless state herself.
She tells you to go kill duskbats, because all she can do anymore is make blankets out of their hides, so she uses the last of her remaining sanity to help clothe newly-raised Forsaken players.
It’s kinda sad, really lol.
In the end, all undead become mindless, it just takes time.
They’re still decaying, but at a slower rate, and it does indeed affect the mind.
I guess it can be seen as aging akin to mortal living races.
Instead of death, undead lose their free will and become husks.
It’s pretty much this- all become that kind of mindless zombie with time.
What’s wrong with enslaving a demon? It’s far better than the gnomes we keep in the sweatshop in Silvermoon, IMO, keeping those gnomes is appalling, not enslaving demons
My lock’s demons seem to have a grand time in the mayhem we create when they’re summoned. My voidwalker can be a little grumpy when first woken up, but all good otherwise. We give each other purpose.
I always assumed this is not what DK’s are doing. At least in the manner that you are raising their soul, consciousness, whatever you want to call it. DK’s are just using necromantic energy to animate bones and ghoulish bodies. There isn’t a person in there to create any sort of moral dilemma.
