How does armor and damage work in wow

Hey guys. so the only MMO i have ever played is ESO (elder scrolls online) so im fairly new to the whole mmo scene. i have a question regarding gear. forgive me if it sounds confusing)

in eso it is medium armor that holds the best dps values. having higher damage comes with the cost of lower armor. is this something that WOW also has? because right now i base my gear around the armor level and although i dont feel squishy in pve content. i do feel that mobs take longer than expected to kill. it feels like im playing a tank as a dps.

Nope. Plate mitigates more damage but beyond that there is no tradeoff. There used to be significant class tradeoffs, IE mages were walking nukes but extremely soft, Paladins were nigh unkillable but had to try to tickle you to death, hybrid taxes, etc. Then they changed it so classes dont have these drawbacks so that content was more accessible.

I wouldn’t base my gear off armor level though. If you only look at one number, look at item level.

Armor basically is class-locked, and serves no purpose other than defining classes separate from each other.
Once upon a time this wasn’t really the case, but that was over a decade ago, and pretty niche.

Wrong.
There’s no difference at all between the armor types
Used to be
Not anymore

On top of what has already been said about armor type not affecting DPS, please note that every class has a passive that grants them a bonus 5% primary stat for wearing the appropriate armor type.

So if you’re, say, a Hunter who uses Agility, you won’t use a Leather piece that has more Agility than your current armor, because you’d lose out on that 5% for not using all Mail gear.

So you’re saying when the game tells me Mage’s armor gives him a 23% physical damage reduction against an equally matched opponent and my DK with significantly higher armor values has 51% reduction, the game is wrong?

1v1, no self healing , classes are all equally squishy.
Unless you’re in tank spec - but that dmg reduction comes from other sources that aren’t your armor

very helpful guys :metal:
