Just curious, how do you utilize Keybinds in WoW, if you do? When I began playing WoW I basically learned to play with how my mother set up her keybinds which is having attacks on the 123 row, utility/healing spells on the “Qwerty” row, Cleanse, Trinkets and Taunts on the Numpad, then lastly my PvP Trinket and Healthstone are on Delete and End respectively. I always use Q to interrupt, W to stun, E to use some sort of speed boost ability and R for my first healing ability. I keep my left hand over Tab so I can quickly target and use my spells, and I move around with my mouse. My uncle encouraged me to use Macros, but I never did and I still don’t!
I have a razer naga trinity, so it has 12 buttons on it which is nice. I’m still learning how to use it though. I’m pretty bad with keybinds in general and will always be a noob. I click certain spells.
My mouse has 6 extra action buttons, the first three are basically the 1 2 and 3 keys. I use my mouse for important abilities like mobility, silence, stun, etc. Trinkets and battle rez are my 4 and 5 keys which I have to hit manually since my mouse doesnt copy those keys. Other than that, Im still a keyboard turner and an ability clicker.
Im not big on instanced pvp, so the only pvp I deal with is in the open world. But other than that, my playstyle doesnt seem to hold me back in dungeons and raids at all.
I’ve got a Razer Orbweaver and a Naga, which is more buttons then I will ever need.
I’ve set it up so the top row of buttons on the orbweaver is stuff like my bags, character pane, hearthstone, stuff I don’t need all the time but use regularly so I don’t need to ever reach for my keyboard. The rest of the buttons are all my rotation/combat abilities.
My interrupts and oh-sh*t buttons are on the mouse, just the buttons I can easily reach and know which ones they are. The orbweaver has a little joystick so that’s my forward and strafe, and turning with the mouse.
On my UI screen ive set my bars up so they match the positions/layout of the buttons on my orbweaver and mouse, it helped me learn them.
I keybind most things, even my mounts and flight whistle. It helps that I have a Razor Naga mouse too with 12 side buttons. Though weirdly I don’t use it too much.
Basically the entire left side of the keyboard is for abilities, the right half for interface shortcuts. All numbers are used for something. Sometimes mouse scrolling I’ll use too. Depending on the class. I have different setups for all of them, but they’re generally along the same lines.
Lots of “extra keys” mouse owners here. I feel lonely with my simple mouse, lol.
The 2 extra action bars to the side is where I keep all my favorite mounts and toys, though they aren’t with keybinds, I just click those. I open up my bag for Hearthstones or Whistles.
Haven’t used them yet, but if I get a mouse with more than 2 buttons might be worth a shot.
I do macro for targeting innocent Algan in Nazjatar though.
I started using a Naga back in 2010, I have 28 binds that I actively use every time I play. I even bind toys like flags for dead bodies, mounts, disenchant, hearthstone.
Been through 2 Nagas and I’m using a Logitech G600 now. For some reason the Naga middle mouse button always dies after a few months for me. The G600 has same 12 thumb buttons as the Naga but it’s cheaper and so far has lasted longer.
A tip for people who don’t have many mouse keys: Change your movement keys!
I actually stopped using WASD and started using ESDF for my movement keys. It’s unorthodox, but you’ll notice if you put your hand on ESDF, you have a lot more keys surrounding your hand and can better reach the keys closer to the middle of the keyboard. That gives you a LOT more keys to work with, so you can bind all the abilities you like.
And yes, you can still comfortably reach your shift key, so you double up on the extra keys you can reach with ESDF. Shift-H is my pally wings!
I’m left handed so WASD doesn’t work well for me, I ended up using the mouse for all my movement controls.
My Keybinds are generally the same across multiple characters
` = Ranged Pull
1 = Charge, Death Grip, Movement ability
2 = Stun
3 = Interrupt
Q W E = spam abilities
A S D = Finishers, Healing, AOE spells
Z = Taunt, short CD Power up
X = Second stun or AOE Stun, Disorient
C = Short CD Utility
Then on the Razer Naga mouse
1 4 7 = Defensive Power ups
2 5 8 = Offensive Power ups
3 6 9 = Long CD Heals, Utility
10 = Strafe Left
11 = Backpeddle
12 = Strafe Right
Shoulder Buttons are Mounts.
1,2,3,4,5 - main ST rotation, using Shift modifier macros to switch to AoE rotation.
Q, E - abilities that i generally need to hit quickly - active mitigaion, stuns, maintenance buffs.
F - interrupt
R, G - other abilities
T - usually a defensive
H - usually a heal
X - movement abilities
V - something i may need to hit rarely but should be hotkeyed.
most of all these are macros that include shift modifiers to cut down on button bloat on screen
for example, on my monk ‘X’ is roll, ‘Shift+X’ is nitro boost, ‘alt+X’ is escape artist
edit:
my warlock also uses “[@focus,mod:shift][]” macros for most abilities that allow me to cast at my focus by holding shift, effectively turning my focus frame into a second target frame. rather nice for 2 target fights.
You’ll get use to it! I’m using the attachment with the keyboard on the side, of the mouse! Then I just keybind everything I could 1-9, then use control and shift ;D
using esdf makes the most sense for those who were trained to touch type, especially on old manual typewriters. i was one of those but i stay with the wasd position because my keyboard has m1-m5 macro keys i cannot reach in esdf position with my pinky finger
I just use the default 1-0 keybinds, and mouse click the stuff on the extra bars. I use an addon like Healbot if healing, though. If I have to run-and-gun, I can easily mouse-click my skills while moving via keyboard. I don’t do serious PvP, so this is not a detriment to me.
