How Do You Self-Identify?

One of the arguments that Ion made for covenants was that he wanted players to identify themselves beyond the class, e.g. “I’m a Kyrian Paladin” instead of “I’m a paladin”. That’s well and good and maybe could’ve been a decent thing…

But as it predictably turns out, being practically forced into a particular covenant just to be able to run group content has made me not identify as “I’m a [insert covenant here] Warrior”.

Do I enjoy Condemn? Absolutely. Do I enjoy the Venthyr covenant? Absolutely not. I was originally a Night Fae because I picked my covenant for cosmetic purposes - we were promised we could do just that without impacting our gameplay, right?

As it turns out…an arms/fury warrior who isn’t Venthyr? Enjoy trying to find groups in both PvE or PvP. The dps output between Night Fae and Venthyr is not even close. You could make an argument that Night Fae isn’t so bad for prot warriors, except the kite-meta means that mobs aren’t going to stay in your AOE ground effect. It’s actually really bizarre…you’re given an ability to drop an AOE effect on the ground, and then given a second ability that lets you kite more easily…

Being strongarmed into switching to a covenant that I do not like completely ruined the covenant immersion. I don’t like Venthyr - I don’t like the theme, I don’t like the Teatime with Barbie event - none of it, except the plate set, whereas I enjoyed just about everything there was with Night Fae. I only switched to Venthyr because the community expects it since covenant balance is far less than ideal, and to be frank, I don’t want to play while handicapped either.

I identify myself as “I’m a [insert spec of the month that is less-nerfed than the other] Warrior”, with complete disregard for my covenant. That is Shadowlands for me.

I got lucky, the covenant that lined up best with this toons feel just happens to have the most fun covenant ability.

I’m not a witch. They dressed me up like this. And this is not my nose, it’s a false one.

I’m a mage. I like night fae, its my cosmetic choice for the soulshape customization and it feels great for fire in aoe. But I would love to try out necrolord frost mage. Am I going to? No, because regrinding 40 renown for an offspec during progression is not feasible. So no, I don’t identify as “night fae”. And when that guy said “night fae join the hunt!” on blizzon I cringed.

As a rogue I’m a covenant nomad as the story dictates and somehow tries to force me into some Harry Potter like sorting hat thing but we call it covenant balance

I would never identify myself as a certain covenant. I have zero investment into these things or this place as a whole. They never gave me a reason to care. And it won’t matter next expansion at all. Nor should it.

I chose Night Fae due to research and the consensus being it was best for the hunter class. I also liked the aesthetic and gear design. But after seeing so many players wearing the exact same gear, I didn’t really want to keep the look and wanted something to set me apart. I occasionally transmog into the covenant gear, but mostly I use something else. I guess by saying all of that I don’t really identify with the covenant.

I have an will never self-identify with anything in this game.

I switch to and play whatever is the most fun at any given moment… or makes “stuff” easier for the 1-2 people I play with.

I’m (on my main) an Enh Shaman who has chosen to follow her own path and not join a covenant.

Mostly because she doesn’t care for any of the covenants. lol

My DH identifies as an edge lady fairy princess.

Hence, Night Fae.

My only complaint is the faction mess. I’d love to be Night Elf, but I’d be a fool not to be horde.
