How do you say …?

Out of curiosity, which was brought on by the rather contentious abbreviations for the 11th expansion, how many of you actually read/say the abbreviation, versus just translating it automatically?

I.e., if you see SL do you say the letters S L out loud or do you say Shadowland?

Mostly curious from a linguistic perspective.

Depends on context. Some acronyms overlap, but I would rather call it by name.

There are no contentious abbreviations. Just one person being stupid repeatedly on the forums.

Tee-Wee-Wee. Because we Dutch don’t say ‘double you’ but … Weeh. XD

I’ll call it the “WarWii”.

I say S L and probably just War for TWW. BfA was B F A, or if I have to put in a lot of effort for those of us who aren’t acronym nerds and don’t play WoW I just say the name of the expansion.

Also buff Blood Elf DKs

It depends on if you enjoyed an expansion. If you had not liked it I would rather say the abbreviated title than let the full name past my lips again.

This is how I refer to all them in my head or when I’m talking to my husband/kid:

Vanilla - og wow (I say “wow” not the acronym)
TBC - The Burning Crusade
Wrath - Wrath
Cata - Cata
MoP - MoP (I say the acronym not “mop”.)
WoD - Warlords
Legeion - Legion
BfA - BfA
SL - Shadowlands
DF - Dragonflight
TWW - The War Within

You’d probably drop “the” when saying it, a bit like TBC.
So just War within as TWW.

I say
Burning Crusade
Wrath
Cataclysm
Mop
Warlords
Legion
Dragonflight

I have never, in my life, uttered the words “Battle for Azeroth” or “Shadowlands”, or any kind of abbreviated form of those titles.

WW is Wind Walker tho so it has to be TWW imo

SL will always be Shadow Labyrinth in my book.

For some i will say the letters if they work. For example if I see MoP iʻll say “mop” but others like WotLK iʻll say “wrath”

It varies. I’m definitely more inclined to say the actual name of an expansion rather than an abbreviation i think. Though some can be shortened for speech easier than others: Wrath, Mists. Whereas TBC, I’ll often say “TBC”, or i guess just “BC”. Same with BFA actually. Just depends on the words in the title and how well they actually identify the thing.

That’s too close to how people shorten Buffalo Wild Wings for me.
