How do you quit?

I ask myself the same question over and over. Why do I keep playing this game when there are better things I can do? I mean the game is still only somewhat fun for me and not as much as it used to be. I now play by myself in hopes that I would just get bored. But I find myself logging in anyway.

I know I have a focus issue, but I need some suggestions on how to quit this game.

Addiction? masochism? Is this game killing my creativity? Maybe.

Uninstall and do anything else.

i’m quitting all the time.

new patch releases - i grind all the new systems and gear for few months, get heroic raid kill, then playing less every day, then completely stop until new patch/expansion.

Although sometimes i completely skip some patches, like i haven’t played during dazar’alor raid

I quit retail a while back. If Classic weren’t out right now I would be 100% gone. I have crappy outdated gear on this toon now.

Addiction. Find something else to be occupied with. And keep telling yourself its not worth playing games that are not fun for you.

Is there another hobby you really enjoy? I would try to get into that. But there are things that may not be as good too; for example I think WoW can be a more brain engaging activity than sitting and watching TV shows like The Bachelor.

I’ve been playing since 2.1 going into 2.2, with probably 18 months being my longest breaks since. I’m getting a new computer in july to comply with the new reqs. My suggestion is to take a break until you find the fun again.

When the game starts getting less fun for me, I stop for a month or two until I can come up with an activity that will be fun and/or beneficial. Right now it’s mechagnomes, hopefully by sunday I’ll have the gnome in hand, then I’ll level him. After that though if 8.3 fails to hook me again I may take a break until closer to shadowlands release. It’s worked for me over the years and I even wrote a novel (albeit unpublished and I have no idea if it even could be) while I was on a break and continued when I picked the game back up. If you’re worried about creativity it’s as simple as better time management. Don’t no life the game, if you’re going to no life something do it on your creative projects and play the game in the down time of that.

I stopped during Cata, and came back during 8.1. There was so much to catch up on…

BFA’s the only expansion which has made me quit for a time. I don’t think anyone ever quits permanently. But I do think BFA brings out the worst in me, so I prefer to take breaks. The systems are terrible and frustrating, which is enough for me to look at something and realize it’s break time.

That’s been my experience, from serial quits this expansion most of my characters are so far behind I won’t even attempt to make them relevant this expansion. Hopefully next expansion is a little more alt-friendly. One thing that made me unsub twice was grinding two ARs. Getting them was so painful it temporarily dulled my joy of the game in general and I had to take a couple months off before I could even enjoy the new races themselves. Mechagnomes have been alright though I guess, go figure. I mean I’m only a few days out and I’m still ready to play the fresh character, this is a first for me this expansion.

Get a gf who hates game. The nagging alone get you never play a game again. wait for a year and you find out games do not matter. That or figure out that games do not matter and play something else.

I just play other games and forget I was playing WoW.

Every time you log in and start playing, ask yourself how many times you’ve done the thing that you’re doing.

Every time you run an instance, think about how it seems like it could be almost any other instance, aside from appearance.

Look at your mission table, your wq’s, etc… if you take a few days or months off, it won’t change. Ever.

It will always be like this. Always. You’re not going to miss anything if you walk away for a bit.

So if that doesn’t help you take a break then you might want to ask yourself what it is you’re avoiding because it isn’t the game.

I usually burn out.
That’s about the only way.

Busywork is addictive. Turn around and start thinking about what you want to accomplish IRL. That helps. It’s also momentum. You have to start doing something at times to get a feel for how interested in it you’d be.

BFA sucking really put me in a depression. Nothing serious of course. I’m not a depressive personality but I went from justifying many hours in the week of play to not doing anything at all. Twiddling thumbs on days off. Now that spring is here I have a huge backlog of outdoor tasks to accomplish so we’re good. Going to fit my house with a new set of stairs, some railings and patch work on existing concrete. Also possibly putting in a fence this year and picking up a couple more dogs.

You gotta take the jump, full uninstall followed by loading up steam or whatever platform.

Pick a game with depth that can keep you enthralled. I’d recommend Divinity 2 or Path of Exile.

This only way I’ve found to temporarily cure the addiction to WOW, is that you gotta replace it with a new game to dump thousands of hours into.

Just go do something else.

I know that that’s isn’t cool with the kids these days, but you really can just make these sorts of choices about your life.

Habits can be hard to break. If you really don’t want to log in, distract yourself with something else until the urge subsides. It will take practice but it will work if you really want to quit.

I used to play regularly up until Legion. The neverending AP type grinds killed the game for me. Now, I take breaks in 3-4 month intervals.

Damn, That struck the truth cord. What am I avoiding? That IS the real question.
