My newbie Plunderstorm experience in a nutshell.
I won’t deny it’s a skill issue on my end but I feel like I could have a much easier time killing my opponent in Apex.
A lot of it is RNG.
I think I am good at plunderstorm… I win roughly one in every ten games give or take. Early fights are mostly who has the better abilities at spawn or who managed to ambush the survivor of another fight.
Then they’re better than you
They must have just picked up better special attacks early. There are some that are extremely powerful if used correctly compared to others. Otherwise the only possibilities are level difference, ping difference, or skill issue.
I have yet to kill another player. Higher levels, same levels, lower levels. Never happened. I might have got close, once. But, no, if I get tangled up with someone, I’m dead.
Is there a tier list on the spells? That’s the other thing, I think you have to memorize what the icons are so you know what the spells are so you know what to pick and what to swap. I don’t know those. I try to read them, but there’s not a lot of time for that.
So, I just land in the green zones and kill spiders until someone comes along and finishes me off. I just reach over 5K to get a mount.
Absolute same. I’ve honestly been enjoying Plunderstorm way too much. I bought all the stuff and wish I could do something with the rest of the plunder. BUT I’m absolutely terrible at pvp. Though I’ve gotten slightly better at evading attacks, and I use my offensive abilities to the best of my ability, I lose 9 out of 10 (or 19 out of 20 probably) encounters with other players.
I did notice, however, I think the attacker has a significant advantage - first hit, etc. I don’t think this is strictly because I never attack (though initially I suspected it was circular because it’s my only experience, I don’t think that’s the case). Typing it, that seems obvious - obviously the one on the offensive has the advantage - but for multiple reasons - spell cd, psychology of attacking, owning that you’re pvping - there is an advantage to being the aggressor. Which I never am. Now that I have excessive plunder, I should try to get better at it for fun, but I still measure the success on the amount plundered.
Also: I’ve been getting around 1000-1800 mostly by avoiding other players and killing all the elites, getting the xp chests, and running through all the plunder. And hiding.
I was just thinking - what I was really saying is, “Are you pvping or pveing?” I plunder to pve, so I’m going to give the pvp a shot and see if it’s better. Will report stats back out of 5. Aaahahahahaha
They’re strafing to the side while you’re standing still.
Their hits are landing while you’re whiffing
They’re probably landing their abilities.
If you don’t know what your abilities do, the counterplay between them, or any of the mobility tech it will be much harder to eke out a win.
Jump-casting, reverse disengage, Repel / Lightning Shield to counter Fire Whirl / Steel Traps / Explosive Caltrops / Hunter’s Chain, generally how to play around Repel / Lightning Shield, using Faeform as a trinket, the absurd range on a fully-channeled Celestial Barrage, forcing Hunter’s Chains with max range casts, et cetera.
But it could also be ping.
I was going to ask if it might be scaling, but you’ve answered that… So the only other thing I can think of would be whatever powers they have vs yours.
The game tells me my ping is fairly normal, but I “miss” so many attacks that look like they should it that I’ve just pretty much given up on actually thinking I’ll win. I’ll still try, but it feels the game itself is against me.
Returning with my stats:
I. killed 0, died on 1st encounter (L2 vs L3 - they engaged)
II. killed 0, died on 2nd encounter (L4 vs L5 - realized I was still thinking quest plunder/pve)
III. E’d 3 - lost 4th battle (was attacked at 1/2 health after finishing the 3rd victory)
IV. E’d 2 (killed on 3rd L8 vs L7, but I was attacking an elite near a chest the 7 was looting - stupid as far as PVP goes)
V. Died PVEing ahem, was stupidly attacking while at 1/3 health, so mulligan…
VI. E’d 3 other players - the 4th was a level lower than me (9vs8)
So there was some improvement (more pvp kills than all of the other games combined) in thinking more about offending other players.
I also die to other players 90% of the time when they try to kill me. I’ve even died to mobs twice lol.
I died to other players when they engage with me 80-90% of the time, but it’s fine, I’ll be in another match getting plunder.
Sometimes I see people bouncing on top of my corpse and doing the little left-right wiggle as if they are taunting me, but not sure what that’s supposed to accomplish, heh.
A lot of it comes down to abilities and level. If they’ve got the right abilities they can destroy someone before they even have a chance. I’d say it’s 50% luck and 50% skill.
The most I’ve managed to kill in a single game was 3, and 1 of those was a cheap shot.
You get lucky and find spells before other people do, then continue to get lucky and kill someone who doesn’t see you coming or has just finished killing someone else. It’s like roulette but with the illusion of agency.
