How do you justify being a spellcaster?

I have no Idea how to word this, Just playing around on my mage and this thought came into my mind, I really can’t get into character while playing a spellcaster like Warlock/Mage, I always have this real-like comparsion in my head when just getting into a character (I’ll still play all classes to help buds in raids n stuff I’m just saying) of what my character would do If jumped by some thugs in an allyway, a real life situation, I can totally see my monk beating the ever living f out of them or bashing them with a bo-staff, Warrior slicing them up, or a crazy a** shaman (Even if magic isn’t real) who trained himself to whitstand pain and bash them with some oranemental axes he carries on himself, and of course hunter and rogue just blasting them with a gun, But with spellcaster I always just laugh imagining trying to ward off attackers by throwing your palm at them expecting something to come out of it and then getting mugged or worse, How do you guys get invested/justify your mage/warlock storywise?

idk how much this makes sense but I just wanted to ask.

My mage is carrying around either a Saronite Spellblade, the Frostscythe of Lord Ahune, Dragonwrath, or Ebonchill depending on what time you’re talking about. I don’t think she’s going to be intimidated that easily.

This girl throws ice spikes from thin air like she’s a discount Gilgamesh, someone tries to mug her because she’s small they’re not going home.

After making this sword I totally forgot mages can carry sword in one hand, Mages with swords is why I like games like Magicka.

Honestly my favorite mage weapons are the bladed staves from Dragon Age 2 and on. I can’t look at this and think that’s not about how a mage would handle close quarters combat.

Complete with getting wrecked for relying on it too much against a warrior, hah

In my case I imagine complicated gestures and hand movements that bring forth terrible curses. I think its more like programming your spells correctly using known formulae discovered by others before you. If you do it right something occurs.

The only thing that ruins my imagination is god tier spellcasters.

now you make me wish WoW had the Dragon age Inquisition casting animations, with the staff dancing.

Spellcasters have this thing … called spells.

They work.

So does a pointy stick. When you already have a stick, why not make it pointy and use it and the spells?

Not everybody wants to be up and front with the big nasty man and his big nasty sword. That’s what your big tanky companion is for.

Ideally yes, but if big nasty man with big nasty sword manages to close the distance, sometimes it’s better to have other options. As much as it may be certain peoples’ fantasies, I don’t want my best shot being looking the man in the eyes and yelling the famous Alliance battlecry, “Have mercy!” then fleeing as fast as I can because I refused to learn how to use pointy stick at all.

What exactly is your point? The OP who opened this thread questions the option of playing a mage or any spellcaster at all. You’ve played one to max level, so implicitly I imagine that you are not in full aggreement.

And you do have options You can polymorph your target, allowing you and your allies to either attack at advantage or avoid the fight entirely.

You can dissappear from sight, or teleport away entirely.

“Give us three muggers all your money.”

“U-uh, sure, one sec, it’s right here in my backpa-”

Frost Nova.

Blink backwards.

Polymorph one.

Pyroblast to the face as they’re helpless and frozen in place.

Blizzard on top of the two that aren’t polymorphed.

Conclusion? One is turned into a sheep, one took a massive fireball to the face, and if he’s still alive he’s getting pelted by a hail of ice shards along with his buddy. This is assuming a real-life scenario of getting mugged so we’ll take mechanics out and they’ll act more human than tunnel-focusing on killing you even if they’d be at 1% health. So if the polymorph breaks on the last one he’ll just make a break for it after seeing you make short work of his buddies, and if either of the two that aren’t polymorphed are still alive, after the magical beating they just took they realize they might be outclassed and make a break for it as well.

Warcraft exists in a world where, unlike real life, when you thrust your palm out and try to cast a spell to deter muggers, you have a very high chance of actually doing so, even with relatively little skill in the art. So I mean… it’s pretty easy to justify playing a spellcaster. Magic in Warcraft is just as plausible as beating someone with your fists or shooting them with a gun.

If you’re using real life situations to equate to fantasy scenarios in a fictional world where 90% of things just straight up don’t exist in reality, you’re going to have a very rough time. How do you justify fighting dragons or being anything that isn’t a human?

Except that in the game, stuff actually does come out of it, so I don’t have any real issue imagining it. Yes it doesn’t compare to a real world situation but the whole point of the fantasy game is that it isn’t the real world.

If the real world had mages, you better believe someone pointing their empty palm at you would be terrifying.

Because magic is within the foundation of this universe and there are such things as close range and defensive spells.

It is kind of sad though that mages don’t have a battle mage/spellsword spec as I tend to find the warrior mage hybrid the best of both worlds. Would actually make a fairly good way to give mages a tank spec as well.

It’s called Paladin.

There are a few things that occur to me.

Warlocks in particular cast spells and curses with their words. I have been pretty good at using words IRL to ward off people with bad intentions or cause damage to foes. Stopping people in their tracks, in more ways then one. I can see the power in words. Ultimately, you may have to back them up - but words can have a power on their own even in a small scale face to face confrontation.

Like saying a foul curse that throws your opponent off and in a frenzy that you can take advantage of. Or bringing up a fear that makes them think twice about crossing you.

Then I consider the lore aspect of manipulating magic and items to produce results. A Warlock using Curses and Souls as well as Shadow Magic and Demons in World of Warcraft is commanding the forces around him with his knowledge.

But I will admit - summoning is the main thing. I Pug often, and I hate being in a Pug group without a Warlock.

I also wish it had the best ship, Hawke x Merrill.

Lmao imagine trying to justify being realistic in a fantasy setting,

Now I’ve seen it all.
