How do you identify a high health target?

As a mage, we often focus on the high health targets to burst on. I wanted to open a discussion, to see if i can improve on my setup.

For the sake of discussion, lets imagine a M+ pull with 10 mobs of different types.

I have not mastered the new default UI, but its seems poor for this usecase, with very little information. At a quick glace, it almost seems like they want you to look at the mob size to determine its healthpool, and sometimes thats what i do.

I do like that visual aspect and in a perfect setup the nameplates on highhealth pool units would be larger, I have not been able to find a way to do that.

I currently use Elvui nameplates with both
[health:percent] Usecase Execute
[health:current] Usecase Burst options.

Honestly, that’s what I do too. Usually the hulking brutes are the ones with the most HP. Besides that you just have to tab your way through the entire pack and just look at the numbers. I agree WoW’s way is far from ideal. Other games handle this differently by giving stronger mobs a different color health bar so you can easily identify them.

I also raised this in another thread recently but I think it’s important to note that forcing us to focus our damage on high health targets because of how TotM works is inherently bad design because it’s in direct conflict with basic tenants of the game which have always been to focus on the most dangerous mobs first which often are not the ones with the highest health bar. Splash damage in general is just not a good solution for cleave situations but that’s what we have.

Not sure what options are now available, but I would be very surprised if there weren’t addons that would show direct HP. I’m not familiar with the new UI or Elv as I always ran SUF instead, but in the past there has been addon options that show both a % of health and a whole number. With stacking nameplates rather than overlapping, you could at a glance check for the highest number (eg: the mob with 100k hp compared to those with 50k).

Otherwise it might just be a case of getting a feel for which mobs in a pack are high health or priority targets. I’m not a M+ player but I got the feeling that knowing the individual mobs was just as important as bosses, at least in high keys.
