I think it’s a really good change to allow people, particularly those who had experienced bad RNG, to get the corruptions they need. It’s toward the end of the expansion and corruption is really important for most classes.
I haven’t done any math but I hope people are able to get a top tier corruption every week or so if they spend a bit of effort, and provided their effect of interest is available. I also hope it doesn’t take months for a specific effect to show up…imagine if we had to wait 4-6 weeks for effects such as Infinite Stars, Masterful 3, Gushing Wound, etc.
Selfishly, and to vent a bit, for me this does sting a little. I have five Masterful pieces and just spent over 1M gold on a 475 off-hand with Masterful 2. I have an uncorrupted off-hand sitting in my bank that actually sims a bit higher if you disregard corruption, so that’s a bit annoying. I guess I’m still ahead and can focus on main-hand first. I also have quite a few top-tier corrupted pieces (multiple Racing Pulse and Honed Mind pieces) that I can’t wear since I like being under 40 for “high” keys and Mythic raiding, so I wasn’t really hurting for corrupted gear. I also disenchanted loads of good gear over this patch because they were either uncorrupted or had the wrong effect, and even though you can’t add corruption to previously corrupted fixes, it’ll likely be fixed soon. I tried to use the Item Restore feature but there were like 300 pages of items since I do mass crafting and disenchant/scrapping, and no way to sort the gear, so not looking forward to slogging through that.
Still a really good change and should give a lot of players/guilds a push for progressing, and give us all more incentive to do more content. It does take away from the “prestige” and advantage of having great corruption and kinda sucks for those who worked so hard (grinding the hell out of Visions, making sure to get a PvP chest each week, obsessively checking AH for good BoEs) and also got a bit lucky. In a couple months I imagine it might get boring with everyone basically having BiS corruption effects in all slots and having more or less maximized their character’s potential.
What do you think? What corruption effect and on what piece is first on your wish list?
Honestly? Not that excited. My Mage is done this expansion. I got my AOTC, won’t be doing Mythic with this guild and have no interest in running the same dungeon 400 times. Gear is useless at that point, and will only serve to make SLands that 0.2% easier when I get around to levelling the Mage in 9.3.
My Veng tank will buy a TD rank 3 and then vendor all corruption after that.
That said, corruption was a terrible idea (somewhere between the trash that is essences/azerite and pathfinder). It was 100% RNG to get a lucky drop, 100% RNG to have that drop with stats that aren’t complete bollocks, and 100% RNG on how they proc in raid. No one should have 30-50% of their damage coming from 1 piece of gear.

Would you have felt any different if they had implemented this vendoring system from day 1 of 8.3 and the corruption effects were less proc-based?

I’m both a bit amused and disappointed. My first thought back when they introduced the Echoes of Ny’alotha currency was, “I hope my inability to get these on my mage won’t come back to feel bad in a later patch.” I also feel a bit foolish for deciding to go ahead and have my alts buy all of the rank 3 essences my mage had rather than letting them build up a bunch more of the currency.
If corruption had been handled this way from day 1 of patch 8.3 then I would have not regarded the corruption system as a terrible idea. It would not necessarily have been a good system, but at least it would not have been stacked levels of RNG to determine whether or not you received the corruption you wanted.
I’ll purchase +12% to secondary stat passive corruptions and ignore anything with a proc like the plague. I’m so very ready to move away from this many procs.

Too bad I have zero Echoes because I have all my rank 3 essences…been targeting Masterful’s for a very long time with no luck…
I just have no clue as to how to sim anything? How much masterful is appropriate vs. infinite stars vs. gushing wounds? What is optimal? What should I spend echoes on?
I can’t offer as much help for Fire, but bloodmallet(dot)com has a list of all the best corruption effects for single target (aka patchwork) and fights with adds (hectic cleave) so give you an idea of which ones to go for. Keep in mind Infinite Stars is very narrow and I’d argue only good on a couple fights in Ny’Alotha. They’re also nerfing Gushing Wounds by like 33%.
But I think Masterful is what you want to go for in multitarget fights. I’m less certain about single target.

got pve and pvp box every week since season started and have 0 mastery% to show for it, so im a fan of buyin em
gushing nerfed too, got my dk some haste12s so i can just stack vers procs, pvp will be a mess but who really cares this late in xpac
I’d like it more if the vendor actually had all the corruptions available at once rather than being RNG. I’d also like it more if I had been able to accumulate any echoes prior to this. I’m also not happy about the fact that I can’t apply corruption to corrupted gear. I gave away a pair of socketed 475 gloves last night as they were a sidegrade and I didn’t know we can’t apply the vendor corruption to crafted gear.
edit: Looks like the crafted gear is getting hotfixed. Nice.

Can the corrupted gear be cleansed, then the new corruption added?
Other than initial leveling, your progress in this expansion is from random loot boxes. Your rewards are random loot boxes. Corruption was a lootbox in a lootbox and getting to use it in combat was also random. There was some timegated player agency in essences that was a step in the right direction. Being able to apply corruption to items is also a step in the right direction, however it’s only recently Devs decided they wanted WoW to start going more in a direction where most of the game wasn’t a time gated russian doll loot box. They should have either had this corruption vendor in the beginning of the patch or made the abilities more like essences. I think most folks are pretty much finished with this expansion anyways so it’s a bummer an update like this took so long.

Should have done my homework earlier, but I guess only corrupted items earned after last Tuesday’s reset can be cleansed and re-corrupted.
I like being able to buy corruptions.
I have no masterful pieces, no gushing wounds, and only level 1 twilight Devastation on low ilevel pieces. Meanwhile I have tons of less than optimal Infinite Stars.
Being able to buy corruptions to get around my bad luck sounds great.
Have you tested it yourself? The blue post leaves a gap. It says old items that were cleansed in the past cannot have a new corruption, and new items can be cleansed and then receive a new corruption.
It did not clarify about old items that were purified after the change. There are some posters claiming you can do this, but confirmation would be nice.

Just tested it on two old pieces of gear:
First item had been cleansed a while ago and I could not put a purchased corruption on it.
Second item I just cleansed now and was able to put a purchased corruption on it.

Great, thank you for the info.
It’s great for people like me that took a time away and are just getting back to play WoW… but for people that experienced 8.3 at launch… meh. It’s simply too late.
Blizzard need to stop this mentality of only adding QoL devices for the content when it’s way too late. BfA in a nutshell is practically that.

Next time Blizzard implements a titanforging/corruption system, they need to add the RNG protection from the start.
Honestly wish they just introduced new currency for it. Increasing gains by 5x but cost if essences by 5 times sucks on alts that didnt have anything or much of anything.
Feels much worse giving up 3 rank 3 corruptions to get essences for one spec, even more if a hybrid. Kinda killed motivation on those alts being so far in the hole before getting the corruptions.
