I personally think they totally awesome when used in the right way. Obviously a name such as the one I have wouldn’t fly on RP realms, but I do think this name works for my character very well for a few good reasons. Reasons such as:
-
My character is a criminal under lord. Wouldn’t it make sense for a criminal under lord to pick a rather obscure name that would need to be decrypted to hide their real identity?
-
I am playing a goblin rogue; A very evil and villainous one of that.
-
The name is an external identity. My actual RP name is Baxter Deathbolt.
-
Does my character really look like the kind of goblin that would care about spelling and grammer? Rather it should be apparent that this character is easily criminally insane.
-
Lots of goblins have last names that are nouns in lore.
If you still disagree though, let me know. Maybe perhaps I could make some adjustments.
special characters are for special characters.

depends on the name, but most of the time i hate it. i can stand it on other peoples’ characters but not on my own.

The only issue I have is that it makes it incredibly difficult to type those names into chat accurately. If I want to /who or /whisper I need to take a six week course in ASCII coding first.
But overall, I care as much about what name you choose as I do what hairstyle you wear. You’re the one who has to look at it every day. If you’re happy with it, good for you.

i only use it to by-pass famous names and use it on my characters.
because i am that lazy.
I don’t care either way. Just makes it a pain to mail them items in game.

I liken it to people using dashes in clever places or odd top level domains because their choice .com was taken. I recognize the scarcity issue and see that you’re willing to have the cheap knockoff because you reaaaally wanted that char to have the unaccented name. Personally, if I had to be Monzá, I’d just pick something else.
I think the whole chat issue mattered more back when people used to find groups via General chat, but ever since LFG/LFR, I rarely need to type someone’s name anymore. Right clicking on them and choosing Whisper gets me there.

I am personally not into it myself, but if that’s your thing then have fun!
“I want that name, g’dammit!”
I’ve never used any myself. Perhaps if I was super attached to a name that was already taken then… maybe? I don’t think so though.
I really don’t mind that others do.
All I can say I have fun with me giving zero effort to invite you.

I use special characters on characters I like to pvp and not be easily tagged by typing my name.
And I use it to make regular names, that are already taken.
But overall I only use one which is the Y with a dash on it on the first capital letter which is barely visable.
How I feel about names with special symbols is that either a) the person really likes a name so they used a special character to bypass the gate or b) they think they’re really cool and deserve an “interesting” looking name.
I try and be merciful and, if I MUST use them because the name I want…or am using myself…is already taken, I try and have it be one of the latter ones so that people can search or whisper or invite without a major hassle.
The only problem is. Is that some think their name means one thing. The symbols make it totally different. One guy, i was surprised he was never forced to change his name. let say i would not want someone to thank i was that kind of guy.

I think they’re unimaginative most of the time(present company excluded
)
Also, it really bugs me when eszett is used(that funny looking B), because it’s not a b and it totally changes the way words are pronounced when you know it’s actually said like S in German LOL

Generally I think people who use them, especially excessively are exhibiting narcissistic tendencies.

I still have flashbacks about the blood elf deahtknights named after a certain final fantasy character in Wrath that used special characters to get around the name rules. Funny I don’t see any of them around anymore.
ß, sad to say it but I used it on a character a long time ago as I wanted to make a last name type of thing. Greasyßeard , think it is still around but just made another two or so toons with a normal small b.

If you mail an item once, it auto-completes the name after pressing one or 2 letters. Most of the time, I don’t even get to the special character before it’s already filled in. Even my Alliance toons get auto-fill ins with the appropriate server suggested.
