Now that it’s been a while and we’ve all had time to appreciate the impact of removing First Aid, how do you feel about it?
Personally, I kind of miss it. I understand its relevance had diminished greatly in the last few expansions, but I wish they’d just made it relevant again instead of getting rid of it.
In the last few expansions, barely. But go play Classic and you’ll see how useful it was back then. And it was still very useful in BC and WotLK. It’s only in Cata that it really started to fall away and was nigh useless in Legion, though the potions you could make with it in WoD were nice. Just a shame you had to fish for those.
Obligatory first reply slightly mean joke aside, I never really got use out of first aid, there was always either a healer nearby or not enough time to get a small channeled HoT off while mobs charged in to smash my tiny Gnomish mage face.
The antidotes were useful in theory, but in practice the poisoning didn’t come up enough is contexts worth taking the time to cure it, and when they did there was again often a healer.
Cooking is currently undergoing what First Aid underwent, where it’s becoming less and less relevant and harder and harder to level up. But whereas First Aid was mostly related to soloing, Cooking turned into a raiding profession for the buffs it provides, so I don’t think it’s going away. Still, it could go away, but if it goes away then so does fishing and if there’s only archaeology left then why keep it?
Seriously, Secondary Skills need to be revisited by the dev team. Archaeology seems “Fine” in the “It provides weird toys, mounts and heirlooms” category. Fishing remains as boring as ever, they just made it less painful by making your skill level nearly irrelevant. Cooking’s relevancy is getting ever worse and First Aid is just gone.
I mean some will say that they should be considered “side content”, things you do to pass the time in the game, but that’s the thing: They’re not that fun and if they don’t provide some sort of advantage then I’d rather just go play another game than do them to “Pass the time” in WoW.
First aid was basically Alchemy’s little brother. Bandages just couldn’t keep up with other sources of instant burst healing, eating food out of combat was a better option as it restored a lot more.
It was honestly a useless profession that was completely redundant, and I say this as someone who leveled First Aid in every expansion prior to its removal. The only time I got any genuine use out of is was in the expansions before MoP. From MoP onwards it was absolutely unnecessary.
I miss first aid, and as a hunter felt like it had a lot of underappreciated utility. It wasn’t a very powerful heal towards the end but it wasn’t on the same cooldown as the others, so why compare? It was another option and one you could apply to others (unlike a health pot).
I’d bandage people while the healer was drinking to save time. I’d bandage the healer while they were oom. I’d bandage other hunters’ pets who didn’t seem to bother with mend. I had my butt saved by bandages right up until they took them away.
That would be my point, yes. It was very useful in Classic and BC, still useful in WotLK, barely useful in Cata, pretty much useless in MoP and WoD and in Legion not only was it useless, but it was very hard to level and the best bandages were expensive to craft and were still nigh useless.
Yeah this is me. Besides if I ever needed to use it that’s what cannibalize was for. I honestly had no idea it even got removed I stopped caring around WotLK.
What would it produce? Staves, wands and off-hands are already covered by inscriptions, polearms and shields by blacksmithing, bows and crossbows by engineering… It would have been a fine profession to have around in Classic and BC to cover those things, but I think it’s too late now.
I think there is plenty of room to reorg the professions and honestly i think they could beef up the professions at the same time. Obviously they could pull out those things from those professions and put them into a woodworking profession as well as other things. Staves, wands, off-hands, bows, crossbows, (ammo if they wanted to reintroduce something like that for bows). Really woodworking could do any number of things, even armor and other weapons…they are magical items, nothing says they couldn’t be wooden.
If they ever get around to introducing player housing like every other MMO has but Blizzard has stubbornly NOT done, i think woodworking would have a great spot for that as well.
Really the sky is the limit, it just needs Blizzard to put in the effort.
