Every season and xpack I find it more difficult to pick which class I’d like to play. Used to have time to play a bit of everything, but now a days I try to at least have 1 of each armor type. Usually my Ret Pally, first class I’ve ever played, since I started mid Wrath, a Hunter, great for solo play and a pet can be fun, though also very annoying, a Mage, and used to be a Druid for leather, but I’ve been using the Demon Hunter since Legion.
Maybe it’s because I’m getting older and have more real life things to deal with, or maybe it’s just to many games to play these days, but I’ve found I just such little time I can barely find time for those 4 classes now a days.
So how do you all decide which to use? Do you just use the same few every season, even though you have access to so many? Or do you cycle every season? Or every xpack? I really want to force myself to play some different classes again for Midnight, but I really feel like I’ll stick to what I’m good at, as I feel I stick to pretty solo classes.
Appreciate everyone’s points of view.
I just play this guy and always have, majority of other classes and specs just aren’t fun for me

I’m an altaholic so for every new expac I level each of my characters a couple of levels to see if I like how the class/spec feels. Then i pick the one I like the most. It’s usually my ret paladin who was my first ever main though, lol.

As a fellow altaholic, I am similar. New xpacs? Usually my Shaman is the first one out of the gate. From there, I play the alts up to the new max level and get a feel for how they play with whatever changes were made to them. The ones I like and need (role wise) gear up first. The ones I don’t, they wait a patch or 2 to get ironed out.

Through feast and famine I play this hunter.

My process is easy. I have a druid main that I have played since cataclysm and three alts. I play those same four characters every expansion and the only time I ever switched specs is when I am tanking otherwise I enjoy being in cat mode. Unlike all the competitive folks, I don’t care what is Meta or what I can Min max. I just want to enjoy myself and relax and play the game and get my gear scored just high enough to do LFR.

Honestly, I think I just don’t really enjoy the process of gearing out alts anymore. It’s the same thing but again, and the game demands enough time to get the most out of a single character these days.
I tend to level an alt, play it for a couple weeks, then never touch it again because I don’t want to do the same grind I already did again.
So my answer is I pretty much stick with my usual main, which is an Ele Shaman. On the couple occasions I went into an expansion deliberately wanting to try maining something else, I’d boot up the PTR for the prepatch or whatever and try template characters on training dummies to get a fair comparison and just kind of pick one that seemed like it had a potentially fun set of abilities.
And then fall back on the Shaman after a couple patches anyway.
At this point I’d rather spend downtime working on twinks than gearing traditional alts.
My agility Druid is my main, and this hunter is an alt, this expansion. Sometimes the hunter is the main, because I get tired of melee. I have more of both as profession alts to maintain the rotations, but I do dabble in other classes.
I just like those two, for me there’re the most fun. Couldn’t care less about what meta is, never have.
If you are a DPS only player, then I would strongly suggest switching it up.
Honestly it’s whatever I’m feeling at the time. Overtime I’ve come to realise i only truly love Monk/Hunter/Druid/Paladin and Death Knight.
