How do you crit so often?

Hi. For the last few days when I join a heroic dungeon I notice other fire mages are landing way more critical strikes.
Today there were three of us and in the end the other’s fireballs crit 44% and 41% of the time, while mine crit 28% of the time. My spell crit read 28% in the character menu not including the glyph and Critical mass.
The other two mages reported to have 10% and 24% crit chance.

I’m in pvp gear with 5% hit so I don’t expect to do the most damage, but I can’t comprehend how the mage with 10% crit is landing crits with 13% more of his fireballs than myself. (Remember I had 18% more crit than he).

The other week I retalented my toon and my character’s crit chance changed, even with the same crit talents. It went up by the 3% given by Piercing Ice which I already had.
Do I need to reapply my glyphs too? Even so, the 5% crit still doesn’t explain how the other mages are critting that often.

Yes this is just one sample, but I’ve been asking other fire mages their crit chance. Players with lower crit than I consistently crit fireballs more often which leads to Pyroblasts, ignite, etc.
Yes, haste is more important in pve, thank you.

Is my toon bugged or am I just bad?

One heroic dungeon is not a sufficient sample size to say other players with lower crit are “consistently” critting more than you. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are bugs. Also I would wager that 10% crit guy was looking at melee crit. Either that or he’s walking in half naked.

Spellpower: 6392
Haste: 1116 (11.98%)
Hit Chance: 1750 (17.08%)
Crit Chance: 1779 (24.96%) with Molten Armour, +15% from tier 2p, glyphs and scorch
Mastery: 558 (11.11)

Talents and glyphs

Taking everything in fire except for…

Improved Fire Blast
Blazing Speed
Molten Shields

Putting 3 points into Netherwind Presense in Arcane and your remaining 3 points into Piercing Ice in Frost.

Prime Glyphs
Fireball
Pyroblast
Molten Armour

I’m prioritising crit chance over haste instead of them being equal or at least until you reach the haste soft caps of 5, 12.5, 15, 25 and 37.5%

Haste soft caps and what they give

At 5% spell haste, you get 11 ticks on Combustion Icon Combustion, instead of 10.
At 12.5% spell haste, you get 5 ticks on Living Bomb Icon Living Bomb and Pyroblast! Icon Pyroblast!, instead of 4.
At 15% spell haste, you get 12 ticks on Combustion, instead of 10.
At 25% spell haste, you get 13 ticks on Combustion, instead of 10.
At 37.5% spell haste, you get 6 ticks on Living Bomb and Pyroblast, instead of 4.

Do note that you gain 5% haste from Shadow Priests or from Balance Druids.


There’s an addon that my friend recently introduced me to it’s called ReforgeLite Classic, it has statweights and pretty much makes your reforges easy.

Just go to the reforger, a new window will open, press presets > your class > spec > then whatever you want it to be. For Mage it’s 15/25% haste, you’d want to click 15.

After you’ve clicked that press calculate and it works out the best reforges for your needs. Then press show > a new window pops up with a list of all your gear, just press reforge and boom, all of your gear gets reforged with a click of a button.

I just have a naturally active crit. I just go off randomly.

its your hit rating…you can have as much crit as you want, you ll do less damage overall if your potential crits miss

You only need 6% hit to be capped for dungeons btw

@Heydownthere: I appreciate the tips about reforging. I’m not concerned with my pve performance I am confused about the vast disparity in crit frequency.

@Terribull and Nettero. I don’t expect to do the most damage.
If I’m not mistaken I have a .88% chance to miss a heroic dungeon boss with my 5.12% hit chance. I’m fine with that being the case while wearing my pvp set up. I can see how that will mess up pyroblast generation, but not how it would make my fire ball and scorch crit chance usually half to two thirds compared to other mages.

Interestingly enough, my !Pyroblast generators always crit less often when comparing, but other spells like flame orb, flamestrike, mirror images and relatively unimportant abilities will crit more often than the other fire mages (on second thought this is because of shatter, but that’s irrelevant when I compare boss fights). This confuses me and it feels like I’m being denied the important ignite and pyroblast generations.

its just rng i find. Sometimes you crit to the moon, othertimes u struggle

Sure. But observing other fire mages they crit 40% of their fireballs on a bossfight on average.

How can I go from averaging 12% fireball crit chance on a boss fight to averaging 35%, or averaging at least my crit chance, plus glyph, plus Critical Mass?
