How do the echoes work?

So apparently have to log onto the character you want the rank 3 essences from before you log onto another toon to get the essences, is that right? Just logging on works and not earning anything?

I have a few rank 3 on my ex main that I need on my now main but I don’t do anything on my ex main anymore. Does just logging on and off solve the problem and enable me to start earning this new currency or do I need to earn some on my ex main or something?

I am confused.

You have to log on the character WITH the rank 3 essences so it registers on your account, it’s like when they had us log on every character with Honor so the combined levels accumulate. Then log on alts who don’t have the essences can start collecting Echoes from the Mythic+ Chest assuming you did it last week on alts.
