Specifically Alchemy. Used to just fly around when bored , collect hernbs and make potions. Now there are all these menus, specializations, etc.
For someone that hasn’t done professions or tried to turn a profit selling since like MoP…
What’s my plan here?
For alchemy/herb? Ok, lets see. Fly around and collect herbs. It will get you to 100 skill in herbalism but at some point only the special nodes will give skill ups. You will notice the added complication of knowledge specialization. Recommend you visit wowhead for some much useful reading about it. Take their counsel with a grain of salt, but keep in mind that there are no bad paths there. You eventually get enough KPs to fill the entire trees. As long as you keep gathering the weekly KPs items for herbalism.
Alchy, well you still get to discover your recipes, most of them. Meticulous experimentation will get you to 100, that and also discovering all your recipes. The other methods are just you throwing mats out the window, so I wouldn’t bother. Alchy also has specialization. That way you improve the quality of your pots and enabling you to use less costly herbs to make the patron’s orders at rank 2. Ignore the R3 ones, they never award knowledge points or AA. Accumulate AA to get better tools for your professions.
So if you read that wall of text and didn’t faint you might agree that professions received a much needed upgrade in DF and we all revel in it!

Crafting professions get more points through many ways, npc orders, weekly quests, random items throughout the map. Ive got my LW and ALC and BS up nearly every point filled. The hard one is the gathering professions. Example I picked 1000 herbs on my alchemist and got 5 points. At that rate ill get it complete in 2 or 3 expansions. I think what they did with professions is just trash. I dumped all of mine except my top 3. It isnt worth my peace nor my money to feel in game struggle.

Did you do the weekly herbalist quest? You have to do the weekly and get the normal allotment of KPs items before cratch ups begin to show up in your gathering. Otherwise gathering have it very easy in terms of catching up.
