So I picked up my fishing professions on an alt and went over to start leveling fishing and nothing happens? I’m trying to good if it’s a new system to actually level or if it’s broken and I can’t find anything. Is it quests only because I’m not getting it the old fashion way?
I haven’t tried it post patch, but it should just level from use, as long as you have the expansion appropriate skill for the place you’re fishing. If it’s not broken, I wonder if you’re fishing in where the game thinks you’re in, say, a Cataclysm zone while fishing, but you don’t have Cataclysm fishing learned? Something like that. But I don’t know for sure.

If you are trying to level in a city, for some reason, it is attached to the current expansion. So it would level SL fishing until the phase 1 prepatch. Now it levels DF fishing, which we don’t have access to yet. If you want to level classic fishing, you’ll have to go outside the cities. And make sure if you are in an expansion zone that you pick up that expansion’s fishing to start increasing it. Otherwise, no skill ups.

I don’t know if this is your issue, but the last couple of times I tried fishing on a low level alt, I couldn’t level up while in a capital city. I had to go outside the city before I started gaining any levels.

You need to learn fishing for each expansion and then fish in the zones for each expansion to level it there.

I wish it wasn’t like that… seems like a poor design choice. Any new players will be wondering why they aren’t gaining skill ups when doing the daily fishing quest. And then you won’t get SL fishing until you are 48+. I’m not sure when the change started, but I hope they change it back some day. Every little bit of skill ups helps getting classic to 300, so I’d love to nab some again while doing the daily.

Fishing is great! I’ve fished up a lot of things from pools over the years, including gear. Lock boxes with rare gems, I recently sold one for 250 gold in Classic wrath. Many really good cooking recipes use fish as well, another gold opportunity.
I keep a stack of bobbers in my bag. When I happen upon a nice fishing spot, I’ll put a bobber on and fish for the ten minutes. I try to do this each time I’m on my main until it’s maxed.
There are fishing world quests, and the dark moon fair has a fishing quest that give 10 points.
I don’t recommend leveling it all at once, you might never fish again.

If you are fishing in a city, Fishing gives no credit. Blizzard took that out a few months ago.
You have to “outside” to level fishing.
You also have to travel to other expansions to level fishing there.
Which is BS…many daily fishing dailies happen within the city areas…

I know about the fishing dailys. I do those everyday. I am talking about regular fishing. If you cast a line you get no Skill credit.
You use to get skill points by fishing in the cities…seems they took it away now…and you have to go out in the wild…
I usually use Fishing Buddy but it messes badly with the new UI now.
Hopefully it’s all fixed soon.
I meant as you were doing fishing daily within the city you got skill points if not maxed out then you turned in your fishing daily and got 5 more skill points…now you won’t get skill points if the fishing daily is within the city only when you turn in the daily…which is BS really.

So much this! Unless you fish next to a spot that has 2 flowers to gather every 3 minutes that they spawn! Love that spot!
Oh… so they took it out completely? It used to give Shadowlands skill ups, so I thought the pre-patch may have changed it to Dragonflight skill ups. Since we can’t get DF fishing yet, I assumed that was why we aren’t getting skill ups.
Fishing in this game is like fishing in real life… A complete and utter waste of time where I would rather put the hooks through my eyes than sit out in the open water developing melanoma.
You’re only half right. You do still get credit, just not for classic fishing skill. Blizzard changed this years ago.
You do still get fishing skill ups. Just only for the current expansion. So right now you have to have Dragonflight Fishing learned and when you fish in cities you’ll gain skill points in the Dragonflight Fishing Skill.
Each Expansion has its own fishing skill and you need to be in the expansion zones you want to level up in order to gain that expansions fishing skills. Classic fishing can be done in all non-Cataclysm classic zones. Except for the cities in the classic zones, as they count towards what ever the current expansion is. Confusing I know, they should have left the cities being classic.
