How do Night Elf Demon Hunters exist?

I could be asking very simple question with an easy answer but I couldn’t find a definite answer.

The Dark Portal to Azeroth was opened at the end of Chapter 22 in Illidan novel which probably takes place during start of The Burning Crusade. But Illidan is already training Demon Hunters in Chapter 6 when Vandel, a Night Elf, comes to Black Temple far long before the portal was opened. Most of the Night Elves, including Vandel, were described as that they came seeking Illidan but I can’t find how they exactly came to Outland.

How did Night Elves came to the Black Temple before the Dark Portal to Azeroth was opened?

There were other ways to get to Outland than the Dark Portal.

For example:

Lady Vashj: In the city above us stands a portal, a gateway that leads to other worlds.
Prince Kael'thas: Yes, I know it. The lich, Kel'Thuzad, opened it to bring Archimonde here.
Lady Vashj: Yes. My master, Illidan, awaits us on the other side of that portal!

I feel like the alternate gateways into Outland have untapped story potential.

In Chronicles 3, Illidan used the knowledge of Skull of Gul’dan to weave a portal to Draenor where Archimonde was summoned because bridge between Azeroth and Twisting Nether didn’t exist there. So I guess you must know coordinate(?) of Draenor to open a portal to it. Kael’thas and Vashj then used the same portal to go to Draenor.

Then Maiev was trapped on Draenor and couldn’t find a way to return to Azeroth after she captured Illidan (before he was rescued by Kael’thas). So it seems like Archimonde’s portal is/was only way to Azeroth other than Dark Portal.

I’m not even sure how Night Elves knew existence of Draenor, place Illidan only found in memories from Skull of Gul’dan (at least until they joined Alliance).

It honestly seems like Night Elf Demon Hunters are born from lore plothole.

Lady Vashj was also able to open the portal:

Lady Vashj: We have reached the portal, Kael. Now we'll attempt to open it!

Lady Vashj: We've done it. The portal is open. Let the exodus begin!

Yeah, it was pretty strange to see that it wasn’t completely out of the ordinary (but perhaps still uncommon) for Illidan to be sought after by some Night Elves in the novel, considering what we had known about the portal to Outland previous to the novel.

It does open the possibilities of alternative travel there outside of the main portal made accessible. I just chalked it up to a liberty that the author took, but it would be nice to know how easy/difficult/likely these cases were.

It’s a bit of an odd answer, really, and it all depends on which War of the Ancients Blizzard considers canon these days, because even Chronicles has been vague. There are two versions of War of the Ancients, the original and the Knaak version shown via the novels he wrote.

In the Knaak canon, the War of the Ancients lasted for months at most, and Illidan didn’t ever really develop demon hunter skills before the Legion was defeated. He did get his special sight, and the power boost, and saw the truth of how vast and powerful the Legion was, but there was no time to teach demon hunters, and he didn’t even get his famous Warglaives in the novel before being imprisoned.

In the original canon, the War of the Ancients lasted for years, possibly decades. Illidan, like in the novels, betrayed the kaldorei at one point, joined up with Azshara, and got his fancy eyes. Once he had the info he needed, he rejoined the kaldorei to reveal he was a double agent. He then was able to train some select students in demon hunter methods similar to his own, before he was imprisoned after the war ended. These select demon hunters continued to follow his teachings, killing demons where they found them, as outcasts. This is where Altruis the Sufferer came from, as well as the female demon hunter we saw teaching recruits in Black Temple, and the demon hunter in Blasted Lands.

Blizzard’s been very vague regarding which of these is actually canon, referencing both of them in equal measure. Demon hunters even existing in canon before Legion doesn’t make any sense in the Knaak version, but we have an entire instance referencing the events of the trilogy (the Dragon Soul).

Edit: I… read the question wrong. Can sum it up as a lore plot hole in terms of actually getting there, though if the original War of the Ancients canon is used and there were demon hunters before Outland, then that might also explain it. Demon hunters would probably have ways of getting there.

Chronicle apparently said Illidan opened a new portal. He also ordered Vashj to find allies, so I guess he knew Vashj could open a portal to Draenor. Maybe he told her it’s coordinates? or it doesn’t make sense why he would give order to Vashj if she can’t follow him. Somehow Chronicle didn’t wrote the part where Kael and Vashj going into portal.

Even if Night Elves knew about Draenor, how would they open a portal given they didn’t have a magi during WC3?

The best headcannon I can make is that some Night Elves ventured to Dalaran after hearing that Illidan was there from Tyrande & Malfurion. Then they asked Dalaran Magis to open a portal to Outland.

You don’t exist in my book :^)

“No sane elf would have spent long years tracking the Betrayer, ferreting out the secrets of those who had followed him. No sane elf would have passed through that magical portal and come to this hellish land.”

So, somehow they found a portal or portals to Outland. That said, there weren’t a huge amount. And Vandel’s group was more than five hundred total. Either way, it is an awkward situation kind of looked past.

Well, I always figured Illidan spread rumors to get recruits and purposefully kept a few random portals open from Azeroth. That said, Kael’thas and his Blood Elves knew where they were. Especially given they came to Northrend for a time.

Blood Elf Paladins don’t exist in my book.

Its been a while since I read the Novel, I should really read it again it’s the best one so far, but wasn’t Illidan reaching out to Night Elves that had suffered heavily from the Legion to lure them to himself?

We know Altruis and many Night Elves followed Illidan’s path. Many initially sympathized and were exiled. Those that didn’t go to the Eastern Kingdoms with the Highborne must of trained in secret. In Darkshore we see a demon under the whirlpool who trains prospective Night Elves and we kill him, because well we don’t agree with his ideology. wow.gamepedia.com/Demon_hunter_races

Because there were Night Elf Demon Hunters in WarCraft III, and nothing said that they no longer existed as of WoW: Legion.
