How do I stop WoWhead from playing videos? (Solved)

Hey, how do I stop WoWhead from automatically playing videos?

Every time I go to Wowhead one of the in-game cinematics starts playing in the little player. I have to pause it every single time, and if I have multiple tabs open it’s playing multiple videos and taking up bandwidth.

I’m using Chrome, and have Windows 10 64bit.

I went into the Chrome settings but there’s no “media” permission. There’s audio, images, flash, java Ect… But no media.

Edit: Solution solved. Adblocker. Got one thanks to Evandas.

Where the frog is your ad-block??!?

Just minimize the amount of WoWHead tabs you have open. I find that the longer they are open the more they become black holes for your system memory, even with AdBlock.

I always forget that some people don’t use adblockers and script blockers.

This. I don’t know why there are still people NOT using it!!

You use WoWhead, but don’t leave it open for too long.

I don’t know how it’s possible, five minutes into a fresh OS install and the ads are driving me so bonkers that I have to install adblocking right then and there.

Ok, well there you go. I got this extension and it worked right away. Thanks.

Wowhead does some serious memory dumps in chrome. Either pay for the premium ($6? a year) or just run some kind of ad blocker.

It was the first thing I did when I had my pc rebuilt. Amazes me that people don’t run an ad blocker.

Personally I just pay their premium. It’s less than a dollar a month and I get way more value than that out of the site.

Exactly. Script-blocking can be annoying when you first visit a new site so I sort of get not using that but an adblocker works wonders and is mostly “set it and forget it”. The most you have to do it turn it off for the occasional news site if you don’t want to deal with that.

To be fair, Chrome is pretty good about wasting memory all on its own too.

I have no issue paying for the sites I use – there are several I’m now subscribed to – but specifically avoid paying for Wowhead because its ad use is so severe it effectively strongarms users into paying. If they switched to just google text ads or something similarly innocuous I’d subscribe right away.

You can also right click the padlock icon in the address bar in Chrome and under site settings choose to mute the site so the ads stay quiet.

You can also block ads, but not sure how well that works tbh, I don’t use adblocker anymore, Chrome seems to do ok and I use Wowhead a lot.
