How do I prot pally?

So a few things I run into are threat generation, and that leads me to this posting.

I stretched gems, enchants and gear to make myself 4 things.

1- (check) 8% hit capped

2- (check) 540 defense (I no longer trust resillience for a simple crit cap)
I got crit by prince in heroic OK with well over 100% crit immune due to having less than 540 flat defense, but well over crit immune. I was not laying down or debuffed by his stun.

3- (check) Expertise capped (currently 7.75%)

4- (check) Stamina out the wazzoo. Currently based on trinkets and 3 jewellers gems.

I am having threat problems, or rotational problems. I can’t tell if it’s due to other classes having high threat, or simply due to whoever face pulled it first.

Example - A slightly less geared paladin starts the pull or he does it on his own without warning. It will take me a few moments to overtake their threat, or sometimes just not at all. It could be due to hunters or rogues redirecting threat, but I would expect to have much higher threat to pick those mobs up with a single ability.

The ultimate question is this - Is it worth giving up my 10% hammer damage and flat mitigation in order to boost shield block value?

I really can’t tell which one is more crucial when it comes to an opener, because I certainly don’t have the time to open with a judgement > SoR these days with how dps play, and I need to find a solution to stupidity that won’t cause bigger problems.

I feel like stacking shield value is going to get me killed more than it’s likely to save me. Having a higher chance to block a massive damage attack feels counter productive or lethal when I could have higher dodge or parry.

Maybe I need to be duo geared and constantly swap between bosses and trash my gear? Currently the only “threat” item I can focus on is Greatness card, but then I lose one of the two uld stam trinkets.

Any help would be appreciate, and yes I already tried Alt+f4 and gitting gud.

That’s all I had

Equip a shield
Turn on Righteous Defense
Cast Consecration

if you’re tanking a Hard Mode boss, you might have to do a few other things. maybe.

Ok so paladin threat works like this

Shield of the righteous has your most threat

Make sure you are using the 6969 rotation

Basically this means you are always keeping consecrate and holy shield on cooldown

Tell your dps to give you a second as well

To go big threat obviously wings

If you want to parse though always use wings during lust

Wings during lust + doing the 6969 rotation (correctly) will put you in the top 90% of paladins

For extra extra threat you can use the strength darkmoon card

Personally I like to use dragons blood sphere sometimes to cheat

Also make sure you are using a slow weapon as they have more threat.

All the ulduar tank weapons are bad so you gotta steal a dps weapon.

I’m using caress of insanity

Single target = seal of vengeance

More than 2 = seal of command

Lmk if u have questions

There are a variety of reasons that could cause you to get crit, there. Resilience does, in fact, work.

Would need to see a log of you trying to MT something to properly assess it. Do you have an example?

I’m unsure what this tradeoff is. Where is it possible to give up 10% hammer damage and mitigation?

If you have time to precast, Exorcism with a Hand of Reckoning right as Exorcism finishes casting, then Avenger’s Shield from range and Hammer of the Righteous when you get into melee.

Dodge & Parry are RNG, and with how powerful healers are in WotLK, it’s not that big of a deal to take a hit rather than avoid it. A tank’s job is to survive damage, and block value does that fairly well because Paladins block such a huge percentage of the time so block value applies to basically every single attack.

Don’t listen to this guy a tanks job is to parse

Put berserking on that weapon it’s only 1% armor reduction
