How do I politely leave a group?

So I’m never a leaver, I only leave when someone else already has, however I just ran into this scenario.

In invited to tank a +16 Halls. Easy enough sure, in pugs I just break up the first two pulls and boss. First pulls go out, their fine except I notice I’m almost top in damage, for both pulls. Weird, but I chalk it up to hopefully they are single target specced for tyrannical week. And maybe I’m popping off idk brewmaster does pump.

First boss, 2 people die to dragon breath. Brez goes out, dude dies to second breath. I end up basically soloing this boss since everyone else ends up dieing as well. At this point in my mind I’m saying, we aren’t timing this, and worse mechanically this is going to be a hard dungeon, and I’m worried about Hyrja and Odyn. I would like to leave because I’m p sure this group won’t do, but since I’m not a leaver I stay.

Continue trash pulls, I’ve interrupted all mystic casts I can, but since dps is low, I miss holy radiance casts since leg sweep, interrupts, incap, and RoP are all on cooldown. The dungeon is SLOW. Strangely enough able to one shot Hyrja tho of course a DPS died to sanctity. We wipe once on Fenrir because warlock ran to Africa when he was targeted with scent and couldn’t clear thundering. Timer is done, but still going through. Long fights, we finally get to Odyn. 4 times we attempt, I’m the only one to get to his mark, even after I tigers lust my fellow teammates. Hunter goes gg, dips from group. Granted was top DPS, but only pulling 39k overall at the end, I’m at 33k out dosing one DPS and right behind the other.

How do I politely say from the beginning, I don’t want to waste 50mins in this dungeon with DPS low and not sound like a dick?

“Hey guys i dont think this is working its a bit much for us im gonna step out. Have a great week! Sorry about the key!” thats all you can do. dont point fingers and blame. You can even put it on yourself if you like “This is tougher for me then i thought, i dont want to waste ur time sorry about the key” There will always be players who curse you out and players who understand. Technically you dont owe anybody any explanation, but i know where your coming from as i too make sure not to be the first to leave a group. If you get a toxic whisper just kill them with kindness - not worth the stress.

And this is what happens when we vilify the people who leave. You are feeling this enormous burden to stay through an absolute travesty, waste an extra 45 minutes of your time, and then not even finish the key because one of the people you were carrying bailed anyway.

You aren’t obligated to stay through this kind of disaster unless they tell you straight up at the beginning, “We have no idea what we’re doing and just want to learn the key. Will you be willing to stick it out to the end?”

If they don’t present this, you have the right to assume some basic level of competence. If it’s not there, you’ve basically been lied to by people trying to guilt you into carrying them for free. Thank you for sharing your story. It is exactly the situation that so many of us talk about as why leaving happens.

I usually just say “good try” or “gg” and leave.

“Wow this DPS sucks balls. We wouldn’t time this if we had an hour.” /leave

Low(er) keys are whack, and I wouldn’t really sweat it. I barely do keys on my alt monk because it’s just painful with how little mechanics are done, and worse so the performance of the players.

If a key is going bad I will say something like “guys, I was just here for score, you all okay with leaving or do you want to give it one more shot”.

I was in a 15 RLP and the group was struggling with Kokia. I think we wiped 6 or 7 times and I explained the importance of stacking and position and notified them that I had 2 more attempts in me. Key holder was understanding, but we beat it on the next attempt and proceeded on for a clear.

I think just informing the group of your desire to give up if the situation doesn’t improve after a few more minutes is a polite way of doing it.

If your primary goal is to time and don’t want to stay if that isn’t going to happen, let the group know in advance when you join. This way they can decide if they are okay with that. Seems like common sense.

I don’t like leaving or leavers either, but what Shrimpneck said.

Just politely say why and honestly I’d probably understand. As long as you aren’t hard flaming anyone or just randomly leave then I think most of us will get over it.

Say in all caps:

“U GUYZ SUXORS GIT GUD YOU TRASH SCRUB NOOB USE DBM AND L2P YOU WORTHLESS CRAPLORDS.”

Then say “Thank you.”

Then leave.

Yep that’s pretty much it, I don’t get rude with people unless they are first. I’ve actually kicked people and finished keys without them just cause they were being extremely rude.

This doesn’t come up too often for me, but in the past I’ll usually try to rally the troops and explain the fight, but if it continues to not go well I’ll just be up front about it.

“Hey guys, this looks like we may have bitten off more than we can chew. I’m down to give this another shot or two, but if we aren’t getting it, I think I’m gonna step out.”

Depending on the group (ie, whether or not they’re cool or not) or what I need, I may offer to run a downgraded key with them, but sometimes I just wanna push higher and I know they can’t handle it so I move on to another group.

Before everyone zones in you say “Is this for time?”

Usually they say yes and ask if you would be willing to stay for completion if something happens.

That’s when you say “sure, but not if it’s going to be an hour+”

Just leave. They already hate you.

Also It’s already your fault to be in a crap group. Make friend. Join a guild, run your own key. Git Gud - the forum

Yeah okay I’m going with this. I’m sure this situation won’t happen often but now I got something to say.

Welcome back!

just be polite, gg and leave…but if you get rage whispered after, you are free to tell them off (just don’t break the rules!!) - cherry picking any of their mistakes is usually the way if they are particularly rude
:dracthyr_blob_dance_animated:

there’s a saying in the RTS community - no gg, no skill :100:

In those situations, it’s polite to drop without saying anything because you might feel like criticizing them and that won’t go over well.

Well, as the tank if everyone else dies you just let yourself die and then type “gg” and leave. Wiping on a fort boss is not a timeable key.

Not at all true. It really depends on the key. I mean i did an SBG 20 last night where we had 8 deaths and still +2’d it. AV or HOV though, if you wipe on one of the middle 2 bosses, yea it’s over.

The way I see it if it’s my key, I’ll leave when I want. If it’s someone else’s I’ll try to finish it unless it’s going very painfully and people are just not doing basic things. At which point I just say nice tries and hearth.
