How Do I Pick A Main?

I am completely indecisive and I enjoy too much and have a very much “grass is always greener” attitude so I have not had a solid main in a long time with me also taking breaks. I really want to settle on a main going into SL but I have absolutely no idea at all what to go with and I come here asking for advice on what to main or how they decided on their main.

My personally I jumped between a lot of classes and specs over the years and I am not closer to settling than when I first ever played the game. I am currently in no M+ or raiding group since taking a very long break so I am coming back to the game basically completely fresh but I am still lost at what I want to play, role or spec. I have most classes max or close to max so it isn’t a question about what I want to level but what I want to play all the time.

Thanks.

If you’re like me then you have like 30 characters of various different races/classes and just play whichever one you feel like :stuck_out_tongue: in one month of WoW I at least have gone through like 70 characters. Other than that my only suggestions is whichever one you like the looks of the most or have armor sets you’re looking forward to getting.

Main a Druid so you can just do everything as your mood suits you.

I tried that as my first character but then realized Druid other than concept is the most boring thing I’ve played in a video game in years. Deleted then on my second day and never came back.

If OP finds Druid boring, I’d say Paladin then, using the same reasoning.

I suppose playing a diverse class could be considered most fun, yeah. At least lets you play all 3 roles.

If you’re clearly a casual player who takes breaks you don’t need a main anyway.

Mains are really only necessary if you are committed to some type of scheduled recurring group content (mythic plus group, raiding guild).

Otherwise, just play what you think is interesting at that moment and switch accordingly.

People think mains are mandatory, that’s only the case when you’re group is dependent on you playing that class/spec to make the comp work.

Well I admit I am a casual player but I really don’t want to be casual and actually commit myself to group content.

Is there a class you haven’t played up to level 60 or so?

Across my many years of playing, no.

What role do you enjoy doing the most? What classes/specs have you enjoyed in the past and why?

In that case you’ll want to think about what role you want to play first. If you like playing dps for example, then I would start by narrowing down the top 3 dps specs you like to play, and go from there.

When I first started I play a lot of tank (prot pally and warrior), up to the went of Wrath and i ended up quitting due to being bad during a PuG and being called out in trade chat right after, caused an anxiety issue that never recovered. In Cata I played a bunch of healer (holy pally) and after that I played nothing but all assorted DPS, both ranged and melee.

If you don’t enjoy 1 class or spec more than the rest, then don’t pick a main.

The shadow priest rework looks promising, if you haven’t looked into them much I definitely recommend it. All of the paladin and shaman specs look interesting as well, they could be a good choice to try out multiple roles too.

i’ve never really had this problem personally, since after trying a bunch of classes I just fell in love with mage and have never looked back (well except for the occasional dalliance with DK’s)

however if I WAS struggling with an altoholism problem but wanted to settle down on a main, i’d probably go with something like a druid or a paladin, a class that gave me the flexibility to fill all 3 roles (4 roles in the case of druid since they can do mele or ranged dps) but thats just me.

As OP stated, they are looking to actually commit to group content. To do that effectively, you will need a main that the guild or mythic plus group can reliably confirm you will bring each time.

Then I would start here, try to narrow it down to the top 3 dps specs you enjoy playing the most and play each one for a few days and see which one you both enjoy the most and also seem to play the best. As much as people don’t want to admit it, just enjoying a spec but playing it badly won’t usually work, particularly for group content.

My worry about hybrids is maybe I might want to only main DPS but like for example Paladin, if Ret ends up being really bad at one point then I might just not want to play it. I did enjoy mage during Legion and played a lot of Fire but Fire being bad at the beginning of BfA shooed me off from playing Mage and I know Fire is also bad at the beginning of SL too.

Correct, this is the main appeal of the pure dps classes such as mage, warlock, rogue, hunter. It is highly unlikely all three dps specs will be sub-par.

If you’re looking for pure likelihood of finding raiding spots, I would lean towards ranged dps, if you’re looking to do more mythic+, melee dps just due to frequency of interrupts. These are general suggestions of course.

I guess when it comes to the absolutely most recently then I would say the 3 DPS specs I enjoyed the most is Outlaw Rogue, Shadow Priest and Destro Lock.
