How do I lvl my pet?

I want to tame a new low-level pet. I do not remember the Classic mechanic of leveling a pet. Now it just jumps in level to match your toon’s level. But what happens in Classic?

Use it as your active pet.

It starts at the level it was when you trained it and will level up a level at a time as you fight with it.

Worth remembering that getting a new, significantly lower level pet is going to make all content at or higher than your own level more difficult for a while. I tamed Broken Tooth, who is level 37, at level 42 and largely forgot about this issue. Went to do some questing against level 43-44 mobs and had growls/intimidates getting resisted, pet melee attacks glancing for 1-2 damage, etc. I made it work with feign and kiting, but it certainly takes some of the sense of power away until your pet starts catching up to you. Starting with negative training points feels bad too!

Thanks everyone. I suspected that the pet would have to lvl naturally, and that WoW would not give it an immediate lvl boost.

Just a question guys, since I am a new player and not really familiar with some mechanics. I tamed a low level pet (lv 10) and I am now at level 28. He is gaining happiness when I feed him but i am not seeing him gain loyalty. Should I fight mobs around my level or my pet’s level to give him experience? Thank you

To level the pet, the mobs have to give you experience too. For loyalty, keep it happy and there. That’s all.

So if I have a level 10 pet, and I am level 28, it means I should fight mobs around my level right? Thanks for answering

Yes, one trick is to group up and keep it on passive.

How about if I’m already 60 (in Classic)? I’m guessing I have to fight mobs that are at least green to me?

Keys to remember in leveling pets in Classic from a Veteran.

KEEP YOUR PET HAPPY!
Always keep your pet happy they will level faster and gain loyalty faster.

Put them on Passive until they begin to get closer to your level. A Dead pet becomes really unhappy really fast.

Grind Green mobs. They are a cake walk for you which means you won’t have to rely on your pet as much.

Keep Stamina heavy gear handy to level these pets. Your DPS for leveling them is not important. Having heavier stamina from enchants and scrolls will help you survive longer because they aren’t helping you DPS.

When your pet starts closing the gap with you start letting it get hits in. This will help with your pet gaining loyalty and experience.

Back in the day, intellect also helped level pets and weapon skills faster in addition to mana replenishment.
