How do I learn to enjoy Monk?

I don’t know what it is about them, but I’ve never even got out of a starting zone with a monk. I just dont get it or something.

On paper, I should like it. High mobility DPS with some self heal, but I can’t get it to click for me.

Someone help me get some love for the monks.

If you’ve tried recently, I found it quite hard to get started as a monk. Work through the early level growing pains. Once you get more abilities the rotation smooths out nicely.

The alternative is that maybe just monk isnt for you. Thats totally okay. All classes feel better once they have the tools theyre designed around. If youre interested in monk, its a crazy good time. Give it the time to fully mature into the class its supposed to be.

I will say the one thing that monk doesn’t do is innovate the leveling process.

Very basic builder-spender style classes seem to have more freedom in their talents to throw new things in there and I feel like the learning curve for monk was significantly (drastically) lowered but to get the “feel” of it you have to go through the entire leveling process where it really starts to come together.

There is no fun interaction between talents and there are no fancy leveling builds. I made a comment earlier about BFA enhancement with crash lightning and chain lightning on stormstrike (rolling thunder I think it was).

Currently balance druid can cast while moving, start every quest with a starfall ready, and you have utterly insane interactions with things like this where you just pull a bunch, root it all, dot it all, and watch it die. (Requires War Mode).

The statement.

is very real.

People seemingly like it from the start or don’t and its a very consistent experience from low level all the way until you learn the bulk of the spells & talents.

If you can make it to max level I think you’ll definitely enjoy it. The experience you have while actually playing in content as a Monk is very different from almost every other class mechanic.

I’ve been playing the Monk vehemently since its inception in MoP. If your goal is to dps, then I’d say it’s an acquired taste. Any class is going to feel lackluster within its first 20 or so levels. Windwalker, specifically, isn’t in a massively enjoyable place right now. While there are many that are die-hard Windwalker loyalists, in their (Windwalkers) current state, they need help.

Having said that, their other specs are highly engaging once they come online. Mistweaver, especially, is boring until around lvl 38 (the Vivify cleave). Windwalker probably suffers from this late-in-life bloom as well. Since they did the level-squish, all classes feel super awkward until their 40s.

The crux of this post is to give it more time – both progressively and chronologically. If DPS is your goal, then as stated above, Windwalker will start to feel more fluid later on in your leveling progress. Furthermore, there’s a lot of work on Blizzard’s end that needs to be done to make the spec – and the class in general – a little more on par with its former iterations. I’d imagine by the first raid tier opening, or shortly after, Windwalker will get many buffs to help.

Hang in there.

OK I’m messing with a new monk, and honestly it’s already pissing me off. Not about the class but the interface.

I use Elvui and every other classes class bar displays fine. but the monk class bar, where it shows my chi is not displaying, and I cant find anywhere to fix this

Do not roll a Monk to DPS. Ever.

You will only ever be disappointed.

Not sure what happened to your class bar. I use a weak aura for chi. :eyes:

I don’t use weakauras at all never saw the use for such a complicated addon

for Mob Hallways? IDC about that mess. WW seems to be considered strong in pvp

Later that day…

It seems I didn’t actually have ‘real’ chi, until I picked WW spec. As soon as I specced the chi bar turned up.

Today I learned the monk Order Hall is the whole traveling turtle island!

Blizzard does really weird things with the monk rotation during leveling. Like blackout kick costs 3 chi when at max it costs 1. nothing flows and it feels broken. I have no idea why they did this.

So don’t start in turtle island, do the new zone or allied race.

Don’t be panderan.

If those two things don’t help then monk just isn’t your brew.

Found one of the people that can’t handle the monk class. Why feed people such negative feedback. If you are geared right, with the right talents and min/max correctly you can be top 2 or 3 in a raid fight. Do Monk still need changes in many areas? Yes. they do. However, their dps if played right is pretty good in the pack of other dps.

Technically, its less complex than Elvui. Weakauras has changed a lot though as well. You don’t need to go through the process of doing a lot the things manually anymore. Just fire up a template and customize it or grab something user made off wago.

THAT is weird.

If you are WW and are top 2-3 in any raid, your raid group is terrible. Stop apologizing for horrible class design/performance.

Post logs. I’ll wait.

LFR incoming

Well, i got my latest Monk attempt (Orc) into his high teens before SL launch. And while I can’t still say that I hate the class, I’m still not loving it.

It does come together better as more abilities come available, and the mastery is interesting, how it forces you to mix things up.

There is something about the combat animations that drives me nuts tho. I hate how he goes from fighting with his hands to fighting with a weapon. It distracting, all the swapping.

Transmogging into fist weapons solves that for you.

Mostly, and it’s what I did.

It’s super annoying with a staff or polearm

If you’re using a 2H, do Legion so you can unlock the Brewmaster artifact which has a unique weapon ready animation where you carry the staff over your shoulder. You can transmog this on top of any 2h weapon when you’re WW which gives you extra style points with the only downside being that you still hold your staff over your shoulder while doing Fists.
