With all the rogues I assume will be running around at Classic launch, I am starting to use this question as one of my deciding factors for picking a main: “how well can these guys do against a rogue gank attempt?”
I’m also interested in hearing about general rogue vs lock stuff, like duels, bgs and raid dps/utility. Who usually prevails in these situations?
Rogues will most likely beat locks early on. But once ZG + comes around warlocks spike much more and any decent lock will beat a rogue.
This more or less…
Soul link builds will dumpster a rogue reliably… Ruin based builds will likely need a crit or AQ40+ Gear.
Shadow/fire reflecting a ruin based build at the right time can “ruin” the lock’s day pretty harshly… The first time I encountered a shadow reflector I literally 100-0d myself.
Beyond that, in group pvp, lock is vulnerable to melee, but only if there’s 2 melee or melee + healer support. The lock can’t actually escape the rogue and needs time to set up casts (ruin build), or just time period for dots to work. It can create openings with fear/seduce/coil, or with outside peels… but if it ain’t dead by the time fear is on full DR, you are going to be in a load of trouble.
So basically the lock by mid-late game will destroy the rogue brutally if it’s solo, but can easily lose if the rogue has team support. In team vs team fights, you can put 2 melees on the lock and more or less completely shut it down, but that’s basically true of most any caster.

Very informative, thanks dude!
Depends if you see me first or not. Also if you have fear.
Good rogues should always beat locks with all CDs with the exception of soul link locks. But even though everyone while play a rogue, 99% of them will be terrible. Soul Link locks with VW will wipe the floor with them
SL locks are such strong a strong 1v1 class/spec that they’re often banned in dueling tournaments. As long as they have some stamina on their gear the rogue stands basically no chance.
Actually most polls show rogues as one of the lesser played classes come classic. I figure because everyone thinks there will be a ton of them so they are playing something else.

Do you really think rogues won’t be as numerous as people are claiming? I hope you are right. Rogue is currently my #1 choice to play, because it’s what I have mained the last 3 xpacs and feels the most like home to me.
Warlocks also used to die to heavy cc, until Deathcoil got buffed in vanilla. Deathcoil used to be a 10m cooldown with a dmg leech, but was then buffed to become a 2m cooldown with a dmg leech and horror effect (basically almost same as current games “Mortal Coil”). Being able to get a Deathcoil off allowed for a nice heal and time to get a fear off.
I’ve kinda thought this as well. But what makes me think otherwise is that 90% of players won’t see or think about those polls. I hope I’m wrong though.
IF the lock has a VW out, could bubble up and possibly get a fear out.
Before death coil was buffed, locks could force targets into negative resistances, and very briefly fear /seduce didn’t share DR…
The only locks that struggled really where alliance ones, and only because wotf was a thirty second duration.
You die to rogues and warriors. That’s your counter.
No peel. You might possibly survive if you have succubus out, but no guarantees, and this pet makes you vulnerable to casters.
Locks are badass in AV. I know due to my many deaths from the dots. I still have nightmares.

Well probably early on Locks won’t do so well. Correct me if I am wrong but in Phase 1 rogues will win and that is how long 2-3 months ish?
Think we should focus on Phase 1 gameplay since it will be awhile and many Rogues will go to lower area and gank locks questing. That is what stealth does they attack weaker prey.
If you are starting as a lock your biggest advantage would be to level faster than the rogues so you are an unappealing target or just travel with some sturdy friends like a Prot warrior who can just disarm them and stun lock them into oblivion while you cast.
PS- I will be leveling as Orc Prot Warrior so any locks need a travel buddy or Tank for protection, I will be around

Also another thing to note is if you want to counter rogues as best you can, roll orc, their sturdiness racial has a 25% chance to resist stuns, can really mess up a rogues opener when they gank or when they try to stun lock you.
In the early levels rogues are hard to counter, later on locks are formidable in 1v1 scenarios.
There’s a reason why there was a guild named “And Two Stealthed Rogues” on every server in Vanilla.
