I have two questions for you scholars, as I would like to try to earn a cross-faction mount as soon as possible.
1.) To maximize cross-faction reputation gains, I think I remember you had to do a faction quest at or near it’s level. This means you’d want to make a run to that faction’s starting area as soon as possible to max out those early starter questions. Could anyone verify this?
2.) When doing quests of another faction, I think I remember that you would earn a fraction of the rep for all the factions on your side. What I am reading though is that this extra rep may stop once you become Honored? Does anyone remember the mechanics of this?
Thanks in advance.
First off, when you say cross-faction, I’m going to assume that you mean other race-specific? Like riding a troll raptor as an Undead? That’s what I’m going to assume.

I don’t believe you had to do quests at your level. I don’t think it mattered, or if it did, it was changed midway through Vanilla.
In general, the reputation you get from a quest is based on the race of the quest-giver, unless they are affiliated with a faction. So obviously, Taurens of the Cenarion Circle would give you Cenarion Circle rep, but any Tauren in the Barrens will give you Thunder Bluff reputation.

I believe that was not in Vanilla. I think that was implemented in late BC or WotLK.
Yes, I do mean race-specific. Thank you for your input!
The fastest way to get another racial mount, is to start a new character, get to level 5-6 quickly, then make the long run to the area of the mount. IE: A nightelf running to quest in goldshire to get a horse later.
This way you start building rep from early on!
After you run out of quests you need to farm wool and rune cloth for the cloth traders in each capital city, this is the slowest part.
Go back to ALL your faction’s starting zones. Doing Nelf quests for example would not only boost Nelf reputation but also human, dwarf, and gnome slightly.
best to do them level appropriate though as well, for the maximum rep gain.

Or wait for the war effort, when everyone will suddenly become exalted with every race in record time, devaluing the whole fun of having other racial mounts.
Do you think that will work with the War Effort not being a surprise? People will collect and sit on mats to the extent of their ability to do so and I expect those turn-ins to be dominated by specific people so I don’t know how broadly the rep will be handed out.
Maybe not “everybody” but you cannot deny that interracial mounts will become much more common as a result of it.
If I remember correctly they changed it either in TBC or late vanilla so that you would get the full rep even if the quests were done out of the level range.
Sure, that I agree with to the extent that people will actually take advantage of it for mounts. In this case, I suspect that cross-race mounts will actually be more common because of the weighted representation of dedicated fans from P-Servers. I think they are more likely to be taking advantage of options to create a specific character from the past or image that they want.
lets say you are level 30 and the quest is green u still get the full amount of rep.
So
- 30 (green) : 100 rep
- 31 (gray) : 80 rep
- 32 (gray) : 60 rep
- 33 (gray) : 40 rep
- 34 - 60 (gray) : 20 rep

So you can say goodbye to trying and get exalted with anny faction at 60 by doing the Quests.
Handing in 20 runecloth gives u 50 reputation. for humans this is 55.
If for example U need to go from revered to exalted (21000 rep).
U would need 420
stacks of runecloth. With about 2g per stack that would costs about 840g. Not to mention how long it will take to get 420 stacks of runecloth.
It was only until TBC where u could get the full amount of rep disregarding your level.
The human racial is amazing for doing reputation grinds of all sorts. Thorium Brotherhood, Firbolgs, Bloodsail Buccaneers.
