How come I can't enchant? (Newb question, obviously)

I’m trying to do enchanting for the first time, and for some reason any item I’m wearing can’t be enchanted, they’re all red. I’m level 33, my items are obviously below level 50 - is there something I’m just not understanding??

Thanks!

Required level and item level are not the same thing.
.
An item can require level 30 to wear and be item level 60, for example. That being said, you havent really provided enough information to go on.

I did, actually. And you’ve done a terrific job answering my question, thank you!

So I can’t enchant anything below item level 50 for any previous expansion enchants. Kinda weird that it’s so low but at least I know now. Thanks again!

If you want to level enchanting regardless of what you wear, you can cast the enchants on enchanting vellum (sold at crafting merchants or the transmog mount, ect,) which is pretty cheap. Vellum has no item level restrictions, can be sold on the auction house or mailed to alts/friends.
.
The item level restrictions will still be checked when the user tries to cast the vellum on an item, but casting the enchant to the vellum still gives you a chance at skilling up the same as if it was cast on the item directly.

thank you again! Yeah, that’s what I’m gonna be doing it looks like - I’m just a little disappointed I couldn’t use older expansion enchants on my own gear. I assumed it would’ve been any gear below character level 50 but you’ve set me straight. Oh well!

Blizzard has left most of this (and a majority of pre-owned gear) broken since pre-patch.

You can drop some of the enchants on heirloom gear, otherwise, they are 100% useless for anything except putting on scrolls to level your skill, then vendor.

Sad. I really wish Blizzard would some day implement a new approach to WoW that doesn’t make all of the content entirely disposable.
