How can I tell if my motherboard has DirectX-compatible sound?

I don’t have a dedicated sound card. Instead my motherboard has built-in sound output jacks. How can I tell if it has DirectX-compatible sound? It manages the sound for WoW and Diablo 3 without a problem but those games’ system requirements don’t say anything about DirectX-compatible sound cards. I want to know before I try to take advantage of the Steam summer sale.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte B360M DS3H.

It is, don’t worry.

Your motherboard has Realtek ALC887. It’s compatible with pretty much everything.

Is your motherboard from this century? Congratulations - its onboard sound is DirectX compatible.

Even prior to that they were basically all DirectX compatible, for the few examples that even exist. But these days it’s impossible for it to be otherwise due to the removal of the HAL in Windows Vista. All DirectSound since has been software based, and the software (Windows) supports it.
