How bad is animal companion?

how bad is using animal companion if i dont plan to be cutting edge in raiding and mythic pluses?

If you aren’t competing then why does it matter? If you like the talent then run it.

dps w/o lvl 15 talent is almost equal as dps w/ animal companion(=AC)

AC reduces main pet’s dps 40% and spawn 2nd pet.

Theoretically, pet dps of AC should make 1.2 higher than others (0.6 for main pet & 0.6 for AC)

But AC does not use bite/claw etc, therefore, AC is pretty inferior than others.

Moreover, AC still has tons of glitches. For example, spawn AC too late, does not follow any order from hunter etc.

Sometimes I use AC for class fantasy, but dps matter and glitch make me annoying.

Blizzard has said this? 40% seems quite high

It shows as around a 600-700 dps loss from using KI according to my sim. Now since KI only kicks in after the target is <35% I’d say AC would prolly be just as good for world content and KI has the edge of course the longer a mob lasts <35%

Blizz didnt say, but wowhead and damage meter addon showed main pet’s damage reduction

There actually is a build where it sort of works, and that’s the kill command build that I’ve been running.

Basically, instead of taking the aspect of the beast talent for 110 you take the killer cobra talent so when you use bestial wrath kill command resets every time you use cobra shot. For azerite traits, go for kill command traits and/or primal instincts and enrage during bestial wrath.

Now, I haven’t raided with this build using animal companion (I’ve been using the killer instinct talent), but I was hitting the target dummy for about 60 mins swapping in the animal companion and killer instint talent. Using killer instinct I do 25-26k dps in raids where I’m fully buffed and enemies get into execute range.

Anyway, while on the target dummy I would do 2 minute fight intervals and on average using killer instinct talent I would end up doing 21k dps. Using the animal companion build I would do 22.5k dps.

The reason animal companion somewhat works with this build is because in this build kill command does much more of your overall damage than your pet’s auto skill like when using aspect of the beast talent. When using animal companion, the 2nd pet also uses kill command so essentially, normally kill command does 100% of the dmg without the talent, but with this talent KC does 60% + 60% for 120% damage.

Also, I say it somewhat works because you miss out on the execute phase where you can really pump out crazy numbers. But, perhaps the overall higher average over the fight duration will even itself out. I’ll try it in LFR or something this week before the raid starts.

It’s ok for damage but the 2nd pet is not playing by any rules at all…

If you are wondering about dps and damage break down of different specs, I did 2 min intervals and took a screen shot.

So as you can see, animal companion with aspect of beast isn’t a good combination because animal companion reduces your pet’s claw and it doesn’t take advantage of kill command which is where the talent’s power comes from.

However, animal companion with killer cobra is actually pretty good because you get a lot more kill commands with it so if you want to use animal companion then use killer cobra.

I haven’t raided with animal companion and killer cobra because the execute phase with killer instinct + killer cobra is a big jump in damage where I regularly get 120k kill command crits when using both aspect of hawk and bestial wrath. Without the aspect of the hawk they fall down to ~95-100k crits. Either way, when it’s execute phase this build goes to town.

EDIT: To see the pics, remove the space between t and p and also c and o

EDIT 2: My dps is lower because I wanted to reduce variance by using the pvp neck essence instead of the first essence you get.

Interesting… any idea how this does in pvp?

Thank you all for posting results

More people should take this advice if they aren’t doing hard content. I hated playing Devastator and refused to run it in Legion.

Interesting, would be cool to see more testing with this!
