The times of Mage tank are over lol!
well it still remains the case that if you hit the mobs before they reach the tank you will probably get aggro so there’s that
True, I do wait a while before they drop consc, but at least I’ll able to kite less now maybe lol.
People remember my pally. More for how good I am and how smooth my runs are than the fact that his name is Leeroy
Aoe threat for bear in wotlk is second only to paladin. Bear has better single target threat than paladin. Bear has more survivability than paladin, infact bear is the tankiest tank in wotlk. The downfall to bear is people minmax TPS. if you arnt the best aoe threat or the best single target threat they toss you to the side.
Bear is the tankiest tank in wotlk
(between highest health pool, 12% damage reduction on crit, being armor capped and high dodge, bear maintains 87% damage reduction. no other tank reaches that level of damage reduction or the massive hp pool. 45% hp increase cooldown to top it off, barkskin to further increase damage reduction, and a change to frenzied regen allowing you to receive more healing from all sources )
Bear is second best single target threat
Bear second best aoe threat (beserk allowing mangle to be aoe, glyph for maul to be aoe, swipe being 360 and hit 10 targets now instead of 3)
Bear is the highest dps tank.
Its a solid tank if you step outside of minmaxing.
Bear threat gets a lot better in WOTLK, though I will say that AoE threat is still lacking compared to the other tanks. Swipe is 360 now, but its still lacking threat, requiring you to constantly tab target maul/mangle to hold threat on AoE packs. Your single target threat and damage output is still really good though.
I don’t tank because I don’t find tab targetting enjoyable. You, however, may like it. I created a warrior solely for tanking heroics because I find them more fun and less annoying than bear tanking.
I would say Blood is in a similar boat, especially if their D&D is on cooldown. They just don’t have the same AoE threat generation that Paladins and Warriors do.
Since you mention lacerate you should test out your tps with different skill prios depending on the count/type of enemies, but also your own comp. An elemental opening with CL or a lock opening with seed is going to pull pretty much no matter what you do, and that’s on them.
But considering you mentioned lacerate specifically you might be overspending rage/gcds on lacerate vs. mangle/maul/swipe in multi-mob packs. Mangle is almost always prio iirc, but outside of that it’s pretty dynamic, which is part of what makes it challenging but also what makes it fun.
This is correct. Lacerate is only for single target, long encounters. For trash packs you’d spam swipe, while tab mauling/mangling.
You get lacerate at 66. You shouldn’t be struggling that bad.
Vendor any tank gear and get some feral kitty dps gear. Like if you are using that “Mok’Nathal Clan Ring” armor/stam/res ring from ramparts, vendor it. Get yourself a “of the bandit” ring instead. Mobs react well to AP and crit, not so much when a swipe hits like a linen glove. AGI. STAM. HIT. EXPERTISE. tho the last 2 are in short supply while leveling with few exceptions like the Cleft-something quest reward leggings from blade’s edge questline.
Most healers are pretty bored when healing a tank and DPS aren’t constantly pulling aggro, and believe me, 4 hits on a less tankier Bear is a lot less than 4 hits on mage cloth.
About the only leather piece I’d recommend with Dodge is the lvl 61 Demon Hide Spaulders because it also has hit.
Use lacerate when single tanking a boss as a filler when mangle is on cooldown. Trash tanking is mangle and swipe, maul when there’s excess rage. Don’t waste mangle threat on a mob you have more than enough threat to hold aggro until it’s dead.
Biggest joke added to TBC was the blue Heavy Clefthoof 3 piece tank set. Provides absolutely 0 threat except the LW 3 piece bonus of 20STR. As the Admiral said “It’s a trap!”
Pool your rage between pulls. If thorns wear off after killing a trash group and you’re sitting on 60 rage… to hell with thorns, the rage is more valuable than losing it to recast thorns.
Move your threat meter display where you don’t have to move your eyes far to see it to gauge aggro when tab targeting. The threat plates add on that uses green/yellow/red tags over mobs also helps.
did a lot of dungeon leveling as prot warrior, prot pally, 2 feral tanks, while also healing with my 2 priests to 70. Plus have every class to 70 except lowbie shammy and 67 rogue. I see dungeons from all 3 aspects and how people can’t play their class. Like how ezmode other pally tanks are that can keep aggro without using seals/judgement and why on earth do locks seed mobs while standing 10 yards from the trash pack? I mean if you are going to seed do it from max range.
Let the DPS die. Problem fixed.
lol. i was tanking on my warrior for some guildie alts. Both who had pally mains. They’re like, “Hey why so quiet?!” Me after pull: “I actually have to hit buttons unlike you guys. I can’t afk and hold down push to talk the entire time”.
I was a bear tank in original Wrath.
I recall spamming 360 jump swipes while fiddling through ICC.
Like stated, tanking gets some much needed love, and it becomes way more enjoyable.
Bear tanks are bad a word and they can switch to kitty and top dps meters.
Just for some context op, the guild I played with during wrath in retail had the server first 25h lich king kill and used a bear tank.
