How aimed shot actually works?

I read the rundown of how the ability works in regard of movement and range, I’m following the steps but it just keep failing.

You can’t move while casting Aimed Shot.

I’m standing still, but It just keep showing “failed”.

If it’s the weapon swing timer addon, it’s glitchy. Just stand still until it fires. If you take any damage it pushes back your cast so the cast bar will not be accurate with the addon.

Yes, I have this addon, so even if it says failed the shot landed and I got the +ranged damage?

You did. Your Aimed Shot will deal yellow damage (rather than white for auto attack). One good habit to get into is to fire an auto shot first, then Aimed Shot, fire another auto shot, then Multi-Shot. That’s your highest damage opener and burst.

Cool tyvm!

Ok, I’m trying to understand Aimed Shot as well. The button says it increases ranged damage by 600. My first take on this is that it increases my normal damage, so if my Ranged Damage does 185-225, an Aimed Shot should increase that to 785-825. Obviously doesn’t work that way since the Combat Log shows me usually doing a bit less than 600. Icy Veins suggests that Aimed Shot is ‘scaled’ with the attribute bonuses I get from gear which suggests to me that I should be getting more than 600 as opposed to, say, Arcane Shot which is supposed to be fixed damage regardless of gear. I fail to understand how this shot is supposed to work since it doesn’t appear to work as either the game or Icy Veins suggests. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Armor reduces physical damage. You’re never going to see the numbers on your tool tips unless you literally are shooting something that has been debuffed to 0 armor.

Also, learn to gauge mob health & time left before death, because nothing is more annoying (& wasteful) than standing there 3 seconds waiting for an Aimed shot only to have the mob die first (canceling shot & wasting 2-3 sec of dps) or better yet die as the shot fires only to have no effect. Towards the end of the mob’s health-bar, you are better off using Arcane & Multi-shot combo instead of Aim & Multi-shot.

In addition, beware of auto-shot clipping with Aimed Shot, by only starting Aimed Shot up right as a current auto-shot has fired.

This seems like it would be a minor thing… but it is HUGE. It’s maybe a bit counterintuitive, but especially on a longer raid encounter, your auto shot is going to be your highest damaging ability, as long as you aren’t clipping them. If you’re spamming your aimed shot and multi-shot on on cooldown instead of timing them off your auto shots, you’re going to lose a LOT of damage over the course of the fight.

You aim, you shoot.
