How 2 marksman hunter in PvP? (noob at spec)

So last month I leveled up a fresh Hunter alt via Korrak’s Revenge AV, for this alt I decided to go with Marksmanship since I already have a BM Hunter. For context, this alt will mostly be used for random bgs and nothing else.

Just a few questions, since I have no prior Marksmanship experience:

#1 - What is the “burst rotation” for this thing?

So far when I run into an enemy healer/priority target/flag carrier I’ve been doing this rotation…

  1. Hunter’s Mark ->
  2. Sniper Shot ->
  3. Concussive Shot ->
  4. Double Tap ->
  5. Rapid Fire ->
  6. Trueshot ->
  7. spam Aimed Shot until charges run out ->
  8. Arcane Shot / Steady Shot / Concussive Shot as filler ->
  9. Aimed Shot again when it comes up

Is this right? Is it wrong? Would you switch anything around to squeeze more burst out of this thing?

#2 - What is the optimal “AOE rotation” for big teamfights?

Is it really just Multi Shot -> Aimed Shot over and over? Feels kind of clunky, so I’m wondering if I’m missing something.

#3 - How to deal with pesky melee classes like Rogue and Fury Warrior?

If a melee decides to “sit” on me the whole bg I fall apart pretty quick. I’ve been saving Ice Trap to try to “self-peel” myself, but usually that just gets trinketed. Any tips?

Because I can’t Aimed Shot while kiting or running away, I really can’t get any good damage out either. And of course I’m constantly slowed while I’m getting tunneled. This isn’t an issue at all on my BM Hunter, since I’m able to continue a FULL damage rotation even while kiting/running away from melee.

Step 1: Go to the specialization menu.
Step 2: Click on either BM or Survival
Step 3: Switch specs to either BM or Surv
Step 4: Now you’re a real class.

Pretty much. Almost any spec(not healers or tanks) can do what MM does, except way better.

Well marksman is best played as a “sniper glass cannon”

Its very effective at pressuring large groups from a far so any pvp content that features this will have a solid place for MM. This means that youll shine brightest in epic battlegrounds and in WPVP when you can can freely get into places where you can pump out a lot of damage and be ignored for the most part.

I depending on the number of targets i just go for the double tap aimed shot but you can also set up a multi shot first. Rapid fire is only stronger when they are between 80-20% which can vary if healers are involved.

Since I’m using Careful Aim, I start the rotation with one Aimed Shot followed by an Arcane Shot since I’m using Master Marksman. Rapid Fire follows so I can have the In The Rhythm buff for faster casts. MM seems to perform best when you know how to prioritize procs.

So the standard rotation is:

  1. Aimed Shot for the 80<HP<20, otherwise Rapid Fire.
  2. Arcane Shot after each Aimed Shot cast.
  3. Alternate Steady Shot and Arcane Shot if there’s no Aimed Shot.

When Trueshot procs from Vision of Perfection:

  1. Aimed Shot
  2. Arcane Shot
  3. Aimed Shot
  4. Arcane Shot

When Lock and Load talent procs:

  1. AIMED SHOT
  2. Arcane Shot
  3. Arcane Shot again if Precise Shots gave you two

If you’re running low on Aimed Shot charges and focus, save Trueshot after Rapid Fire, then keep spamming Aimed and Arcane Shot pairs for the duration of In The Rhythm, then cast Rapid Fire again and repeat. Only cast Rapid Fire when you have no focus or need to refresh In The Rhythm.

Save Double Tap for Rapid Fire for the extra Focus regen, but I don’t recommend doing this during Trueshot procs(if you have the Trueshot Mastery honor talent, you get a halfway Focus refill automatically).

But my suggestion is heavily reliant on the gear and talent build I have.

AoE rotation is that you only cast multishot just to get Trick Shots. You use it instead of arcane shot for the rotation I suggested, with the exception that you cast it first to get the proc.

  1. Multishot
  2. Aimed Shot
  3. Multishot
  4. Rapid Fire
  5. Multishot
  6. Aimed Shot OR Multishot again if you have no charges

Kiting is a thing of the past here, but if you make good talent choices, you have two incaps and one more gap opener.

  1. Use Bursting Shot and Hi-Explosive Trap inbetween Aimed Shot casts.
  2. Use Rapid Fire along with Disengage(though try to save it for snare and root breaks if you have Posthaste).
  3. Use Freezing Trap to distance yourself by jogging.
  4. Use Scatter Shot to stop someone where they’re at within range.
  5. Use tar trap close to where you’d be standing when melee comes.
  6. After all this, stand still and keep hardcasting, moving only when you’re casting arcshots, multishots, steady shots, or rapid fire. The best defense is a good offense, so your chances are far better if you stand still. Hopefully you’ll have Survival of the Fittest up.
  7. Use Aspect of the Cheetah when you really need to hit the gas, with a Concussive Shot for good measure.
  8. Use Aspect of the Turtle only to perform non-combat actions(traps, popping Trueshot, feign death to recast Camo, etc.) and to deter high-resolution enemy burst.

The spec is really designed for better positioning, but these are the techniques I picked up from the harsh urban fighting I’ve done all xpac. If you have the best positioning possible, you can completely devote your rotation to all damage, and the more damage you can do, the better. But when melee closes in, stand still as MUCH as you can, avoiding only the high-resolution burst. We are given mail armor for a reason, I’m sure of it…

Edit: the TL;DR version

  1. Know how to gear. Agi>Msty>Haste>Crit>Vers is your stat weight order according to Pawn and Mr. Robot.
  2. Know your talents, traits, and essences.
  3. You’re either damaging or running away; not both at the same time.
  4. Congratulations! You’re Febreezed trash(real talk) that doesn’t need to be taken out too soon.
