Housing questions

“The team wanted to end the Warcraft Direct on player housing to start conversations and discussions, and listen to what people want to see most from it.”

I guess the first thing to be asked is this Garrison 2.0? Open world but phased to be only seen by you or is this going to be a neighborhood/city type thing? Lots of other players houses to view like a player city?

If neighborhoods, can see other peoples homes at will and the inside (when invited in).

Will houses come in different sizes (apartment sized, house sized, mansion sized? Will there be any costs or upkeep associated with it?

Are guild houses in the works? Also preferably in neighborhoods

Will they come in different styles? Like a Dwarf living in a Orc style home or a Night elf in an Forsaken style home.

Im undecided on AH/crafting tables/etc being allowed since it’ll definitely take away from major cities but that depends on what the housing is supposed to accomplish. Are they supposed to be housing thats a part of a major city or out in the world like garrions

Now im assuming housing is going to be Warband content. Like 1 house per account. Having said that, could my non-logged in Warbound characters get the NPC role and wander the home doing random stuff? Like 2 of them sit down by the fire and play some hearthstone or something. Just give it life while im out and about saving the world for the millionth time.

EDIT: I am familiar with (and a fan of) FFXIVs housing system. Gives the housing districts a sense of community to an extent with an absolute ton of customization options. Im just not familiar with other games housing systems to make any other comparision.

Good question. i wouldn’t be opposed to either of em. FFXIV has several diff cities where you can go look at other peoples’ places, while ESO is phased, with other differences between those 2 as well, but also some similarities.

Got these in FFXIV too, would be neat to have em in WoW too.

yes.

this will not be Archeage.

Yeah, I through an edit in there. I do like FFXIVs housing districts and would like something similar as opposed of just a “this is my house” that no one else can see. Also even tho this is “my” house, it only comes in shades of Stormwind (ally) and Orgrimmar (horde).

Two things I would very much NOT want to have in this housing addition.

I just dont have any comparison or just dont remember much about other games houses, except for Asheron’s call but that was 25 years ago

Rift did it instanced.

I believe Orcs will have their own style of homes, meaning, more of a rugged look, compared to say, Humans, whose homes will look more elegant

Honestly, if they do it SWTOR style I’m happy.

Let me unlock functional stuff from regular content, or buy cosmetic items.

If they are attached to major cities, that Id understand. That would be the simplest and easiest route to take.

If they are not attached to major cities though and just have their own hubs that exist “somewhere” out in the world (could be just a “zone” built specifically for a house division), what if as an Orc, I dont want to live in an Orc styled home. Maybe I like Dwarf homes lol. Or maybe as a Human, i have good taste and want to live in a Gnome styled home.

We have no information to go on so how would we know . We can only give our guess at what it will be .

Mine is that , like in every other game that has it that I have played it will be the worst part of the game and one that most will not bother with after a month

You are correct. We have NOTHING to go on, but Blizzard did an interview and specifically said “The team wanted to end the Warcraft Direct on player housing to start conversations and discussions, and listen to what people want to see most from it.”

So they gave us nothing other than a 20 second vid and want us to talk about it. So here we are lol.

They need to do a blog sooner rather than later about what they are thinking if they really want good convos and discussion before its to late and nothing we say ends up mattering in the end. At least give us something to discuss instead of wild thinking

Well, your going to have to decide which race to play, because, imagine if there are human styled shops in Orgrimmar, or NE styled shops in Stormwind. It doesnt make sense, does it?

Just my 2 cents

EDIT: replying to Orkus, a few posts above

Thats what i said.

Option 1: If its attached to major cities, thats that. If youre Horde, you live in Undercity, Org, Thunderbluff, or Silvermoon. If youre Alliance, you live in SW, IF, Bel’ameth, maybe Gilneas. Maybe they place some in neutrally located cities. Dorn maybe. New Dalaran if it gets rebuilt in an expansion or two (surely they wouldnt destroy it a 3rd time)

Option 2: If its not attached to a city and instead attached to some instanced housing district out in the world, do you get to choose what your house looks like?

Option 1 is probably infinitely easier to implement.

Some pros and cons I might see with this (personally for me I’m on the fence about it)

PROS
For Roleplay realms (WRA, Moonguard, etc) depending on how they implement it, it might encourage out in the world Roleplay for them, so that folks might not feel just forced to Rp in one main spot?

A way to display and show off your Favorite things: Mounts, toys, pets, etc.

maybe JUST MAYBE… they might implement us being able to craft our OWN furniture for these houses. bed, chairs… tables? I’d be STOKED for this!

What if they made it optional in a way like House open to the Public, where folks can come in and see all the things you set up but not change anything, or Guild based, where your guild can come in and help design guild options for it, where guildmembers can see those changes?(ironically Guildwars 2 had something like this where guildmates could help build their guild location up with things crafted or bought from a vendor) Or private, where only YOU can do things in it? That’d be interesting…

CONS

it could potentially make it so Major hubs become obscelete especially if you implement items like barber, Auction house, mail… etc… But they have the bruto for things like that and folks still linger around major hubs … so maybe not? we’ll see?

It gets short sighted and instanced, like in the raid… or the garrison…and you have to be in an actual group to see each other… whiiiich technically we have the garrisons for that already…

it gets Microtransactioned all to heckers and everything is in the store… x.x. (I REALLY hope that won’t be the case, maybe special items on trading post or something)

Those are just some things that had crossed my mind when I heard it…

I loved how Star Wars Galaxies did player housing, with cities, and guild halls, as well as the Politician class.

As far as option 2 goes, i think if it is a housing zone not connected a major city, but it is actually located in say, a wider zone of the same race.

For example, Orgrimmar is located in Durotar. You would then have an area for Orcs to built their homes, far away from the major city. And, it would still have the same hut-designed homes.

Same for the other races

I want something completely customizable from the inside out and if it is in a community, I want to make sure that I can lock other people out of it because I don’t need people coming and going from my house without my permission or being able to destroy it like some people can do in certain games. And just like in Star Wars, the old Republic I want the ability to give people keys so they can come and go from my home if they choose to.

The answer to OP’s question is that absolutely nothing has been confirmed. Personally I am keeping my expectations very low.

A few things I am hoping for:

That it is NOT a warband house, unless we are able to make it look different for every character. I’d like a pandaren looking house for my guy here, a draenei one for my hunter, nelf for them, undead for them etc etc. I want themes for all of my alts, not the same house for each one, that would be pretty lame in my opinion.

Would be nice to have different decorations/style for each race and class. Like above, each one of my alts would have different styles, and would like to lean towards their race and their class if possible. My hunters won’t want the same look as my monks or mages.

Would love for garrison, class hall or alt npcs walking around, visiting, whatever.

5-10 battle pets roaming around inside and out

Mounts outside, parked or in a pen next to the house

Hunter pets/warlock pets outside in a pen, or maybe 1-2 inside at a time.

I’ll leave it there, but I have a lot of other thoughts, as we all do. I am going to keep my hope down deep though, because I don’t reaalllly know what to expect at this point.

First and foremost, please know that the Garrison isn’t housing as much as putting Tabasco on a Hot Pocket isn’t cooking.

Open world unphased cities would be a nightmare on the servers; would lag more than WoW usually does and would be a pain in the butt; what would stop someone from plonking their house down on a Newbie Zone?

The idea I’m figuring if they do have neighborhoods, it would be instanced but either random neighborhoods OR phased.

Chances are this’ll be like the Strongholds in SWTOR

Totally. Im not looking for unphased anything. That would destroy their already laggy servers and I was also using the Garrison only as a comparison since its the closest we’ve gotten in WoW.

Garrison was located in a spot in SMV that was phased to where only you could see it. So housing would definitely be its own “zone” so to speak. I personally dont want to fly around and see housing developments all over the world.

I liked FFXIVs housing areas and customization, although I disliked how they let people obtain them.

I do want neighborhoods.
I do want customizations, both inside and out.
Amenities such as AH/Crafting im on the fence about. Might harm major hubs at first, but i think players will drift back to cities eventually. Just disable trade chat in player hubs lol.

However, I think the easiest route for blizzard is to attach them to existing cities with their matching buildings. Org = Orc style homes, SW = Human style, etc. Which would leave just the surrounding housing lot to be decorated and the inside.

Doors need to lock because not one of us will trust the neighborhood.

As someone else said and ive said again, we know nothing but blizzard apparently wants discussion about things we know nothing about… I really wish Bliz gave us a blog or something about the basics. Do we get to choose the design of the house? Small, medium, or large? Decorate inside and outside? Solo house or neighborhood?

Anything would give players a better starting point for the discussion they are asking for.
