Before I get trolled with the “we already have this in garrisons” comments, that’s obviously not what this is about lol.
I’m talking like Conan Exiles level of base building and housing. Do you think something like this could work in WoW and become a mainstay feature like M+? I think it would have be instanced and not like a “stake your claim out in the world” ArcheAge type of deal where that’s really abusable.
Would you like to see this?
Would you like it extended to include PvE elements like monsters invading your stronghold, or PvP elements where you can say sign up on the Group Finder to defend your base from players and gain rewards? Or assault other strongholds and gain rewards if you succeed.
I think it would be beyond neat.
I have no idea what Conan Exiles is. You might want to elaborate.
This is a much discussed topic and Garrisons already showed us how it splits up the playerbase and much of the negative changes housing would have?
As much as it would be fun, I don’t think it fits in a game like World of Warcraft.
I love housing in other MMOs. I honestly don’t know how well it would fit in this game though, and it doesn’t seem like the type of content Blizzard is interested in. They’re more about e-sports and mythic content.
Sorta related - I’ve always thought guild housing/bases would be a fun thing to contribute to (probably through achievements rather than exclusively gold and raw materials, so smaller guilds have a chance).
It’s just really hard to design player-owned housing type of content because it’s incredibly easy to fall into either being:
- “Useless” - purely for flavor, so people will feel that Blizzard should’ve spent that time making other forms of content (this argument gets extra recognition during end-of-expansion content droughts)
- Overpowered - people will never want to leave them, like what happened with garrisons.
You walk a really fine line trying to balance the two: Blizzard’s informal policy is that they do not want excessive portal hubs - mage tower (& horde analog) is about the best, and only, thing we can hope for there. Missions tables were a huge part of why no one ever left their garrison. Having an AH there would also result in people never leaving. It’s tough to come up with ideas that would work.

It would be an interesting feature for a WoW 2, and a certain old private server had the ability to claim property and build it.
I could see a new game allowing highly established guilds to purchase, construct and maintain a small ‘zone’, like an outpost, and so long as the guild stays active in doing so, it would remain available to players in game to adventure from.
Not nesisarily, garrisons showed us what would happen if blizzard made player housing, that you would have to return to every 30 minuets. I think completly cosmetic player housing would have a much less dramatic effect garrisons had.

I can think of a few reason why it doesn’t work in WoW, mainly the way the game places down objects and doodads are kind of wonky, not really made for the average user to place down. Structures are also one solid object, they weren’t meant to be customized.
No, I wouldn’t like to see it. No, it wouldn’t be a mainstay feature like M+, sure people would use and enjoy it. But not nearly as many as are into endgame.
No, the only way any kind of housing would work with wow is if it were phased. There’s not enough real estate in game for everyone to be able to build a house. I don’t want wow to end up like SWG, with houses and player build towns cluttering up zones where towns and houses shouldn’t be. (Like Tatooine or Dantooine.)
Garrisons were your own mini-city. That is why garrisons didn’t work. Garrisons were NOT housing.
And if Blizzard isn’t paying attention to how remarkably popular “Animal Crossing” is, which is just a collection and housing/landscape design game, then they are stupid. Many people enjoy having a space to customize and decorate. Many people like doing tasks to get things for their virtual space. Why would you not put that in WoW?
If you want to grow modern WoW you have to remake it and incorporate various kinds of gaming into the larger overall game. Why not housing?

Yeah, one thing that would be really cool is seeing your alts chilling and relaxing in your house/base while you’re playing your main character. That would be a really cool and thematic thing to experience, and encouraging playing lots of alts.

I personally think housing is stupid, but that being said if you like it I’m ok with it being a thing. Make it like FFXIV’s housing just not with that random timer bs. I’m fine selling you things to furnish your new house/base even if I think it’s a waste of code.
I doubt that a full blown building system like exists in most survival games would work in WoW.
Housing is something that would work best if it were a fun side thing that you could ignore if you didn’t care to do it, like pet battles are right now.
Unfortunately Blizzard’s attempt at Warcraft “housing” was making it the central mandatory feature of the entire expansion, and then put a bunch of timer mechanics in it.
I’d love housing myself, but I don’t really see it happening. It’s a huge amount of effort that could be spent on better things.
To be successful I think it has to be totally cosmetic and optional. No gear rewards or anything that would make it feel mandatory. Which is probably why it hasn’t been justifiable to be done.
