So recently, as I was perusing old Warcraft items I had, I found my old copies of Warcraft Legends. For those who are not familiar they were a series of manga-style books set in the Warcraft universe. They focused on smaller stories around the universe. Delving into stories like a the sad tale of a Dwarven blacksmith in Booty Bay, or a Tauren having to learn a valuable lesson, or a story about the Forsaken being hunted down by the Scarlet Crusade.
One of the stories inbetween the penultimate and final volume of the series focused on Draka, from the main timelime. It’s actually a rather nice story and one of the few split across multiple ‘stories’. The story was well told, and showed Draka coming into her own and all of that. While I was re-reading it I noticed that the writer on it (each story had a writer and an artist) was none other than Golden herself.
This actually gives me some hope for her appearance in Shadowlands as I recall the story did a good job of showing her character as strong and smart and determined. (As much as 2 chapters in a Manga can) So I’m a bit more hopeful that they can do a good job with the character now.
Also I just wanted to remind people Warcraft Legends existed.
Maldraxxus seems to be for fighters, those who didn’t give up in life. And if I recall, Draka faught pretty viciously against the guards who attacked her and Duortan, killing one them.
Well, if one of the current writers on Blizzard’s staff previously wrote a story about her and would like to revisit the character, that explains a lot.
Draka being an amazing warrior even in death doesn’t bother me at all- she clawed her way from a frail birth into a fighter that could impress and eventually marry the Frostwolf Chieftain. I also heard that she only stopped fighting her assassins when she died, even though she was being hacked to pieces, but I don’t have the book on hand to verify the latter. Even if the latter is exaggerated, I still think she has a pretty strong legacy to live up to. It’s just not a big legacy like all the other names advertised to return.
Of all people, I can see Draka having a more egalitarian vibe, as far as racial politics. Born out of learning how awful her own race can be. Similar to Illidan.
In Warcraft 3, as she frees Illidan, Tyrande says:
“Your people have need of you once more.”
To which, he replies:
“Because I once cared for you, Tyrande, I will hunt down the demons. But I will never owe our people anything.”
I don’t know what exactly they will do with her, but I could see her putting those sort of racial politics aside for more situational or philosophical battles. Like Illidan. Which may be the point.
Noo, I think she’ll be happy to know that her people have gotten over their demon juice addiction. Especially considering its her son that helps them out. And that those who betrayed their race are dealt with. How do Shadowlands work in that regard? Is she not aware of anything that transpired after her death? Cause she’s in for a ride, if that’s the case.
She wasn’t killed by guards, after reaching Orgrim Doomhammer to speak against Gul’dan they were ambushed and butchered by a band of assassins sent by the latter, Thrall was left there to be eaten or starve to death.
Don’t remember now if this story was told in Rise of the Horde or Lord of the Clans, hopefully it wasn’t retconned with movie crap
