A couple reasons.
Because if someone needs to attack achievements or character progression in order to win an argument, they’ve already lost. You shouldnt need to use personal attacks to make a point, because in an MMO using a single player’s experience as ammunition to throw at them still leaves you with everyone else’s experience unspoken for. If you just go into someone’s achievement tab and say “Lol this guy hasnt even done a +15 yet”, that doesnt magically make the guy’s argument wrong, it just means you’ve taken the laziest path of least resistance to discredit it.
You should be explaining and arguing your point as to why the guy is wrong, not throwing personal attacks at him and spitting insults. By not posting on my main, people lose this avenue and are forced to actually address the points I make instead of just lazily going “oh well you havent cleared a Mythic raid when it was current content, opinion disregarded”.
Also this character WAS my main for a while on Classic. I eventually switched mains and then later stopped playing Classic, but I still had all my post history on this character so I never bothered to switch.
But most importantly of all: I post on a character that people cant investigate the Armory of because it makes some people unfathomably, unspeakably, vein-burstingly furious. Watching nerds sperg out over nothing never gets old.
The Armory is like the forum’s DPS Meter. If people cant check it, it throws them off. It forces them to either re-evaluate or go into a murderous rage. Either is fine with me.

I mean they’re a lot of toxic people I have met who are also level 60 characters.
I preassume you didn’t check the battleground and arena forums?

The sausage king of Chicago!?
I thought I would be maining Autai this expansion, but I’m not and the character I am maining isn’t named Autai. If I had called her Autai I’d be posting on her.
It kinda sad people call you out for having a different opinion, while acting like some pinnacle of social virtue and justice.
Anonymity does breed toxicity
I prefer to be anonymous. It’s no different than posting on reddit where no one would know who you play in the game. If I posted on my main, than I wouldn’t maybe be as brutally honest as I am.
Your avatar is so sexy. Like wow

LOL. Probably just Edgyjojomeme in Cyrillic.
It’s easier to be honest, to be wrong, to be corrected, on an anonymous alt.
For me at least.
Unfortunately, there is a strong element of forum douchery. Why would I not want to avoid that, when the solution is so simple.
Who my “main” is, what I’ve done, and what I am wearing, are none of anyone’s business. What is relevant are the words that I chose in my reply.

This topic comes up all the time.
So once again…
Got stuck on this alt when the forums launched. Wasn’t farming forum rep over again just to swap to Thallia. People got to know this character.

I didnt realize my icon was toggled on my alt-classic WoW level 37 for years and fixed it the other day
Forum stats (and trust level) are tied to charactername-servername instead of actual characters, which is why I post on this alt. When the forums originally launched, Bluster-Area52 was actually one of my “mains”. I went alliance though and by that time already had trust 3 and didn’t feel like starting over, so I made an alt with the same name-server which picks up the forum stats as if it were the same character.
I don’t use a classic alt or turn off account-wide achievements though, and all of the characters I play are linked on check-pvp for anyone to see.
I think the only time alts are really annoying is when someone is boasting about rating/progression or rating/progression bashing someone else when they are on a classic alt or have account-wide achievements turned off. People that do that are probably terrified of their actual progress being called out.
Lots of people troll on classic alts too because they can’t be tied to the character they usually post on. TBH I don’t think classic alts should be able to post outside of the classic forums.

Pretty much the same when the new version launched. It just auto switched me to this character so I just ran with it.
I like to call it my forum toon, there’s no “hiding” of anything like
that’s such a silly argument but I’m sure people do for whatever reason.

I had at least 10 or so people message me in game cause I post on here on my main character but I don’t really care.
Not only that, but you loose your posting main if you transfer. To be tied to your forum stats after a transfer you have to remake the character name on the server you left to reclaim your info. That’s what I learned, after the fact, and I wouldn’t have transferred if I had known about it before hand.
I hope they ditch this forum software after this expac. It falls way short of what I expect for Blizzard.

Whatever I’m on is my main, I play one character at a time and that’s it.
The fact is that anybody who starts a thread with “honest question” in the title or first sentence knows full well that without that disclaimer readers will assume it is flamebait. They’re looking to fool a few naive readers.
Reading “honest question” should automatically red flag that thread in the readers’ minds.
