Former CE mage here, wondering how current mages find the current meta enjoyable.
I cannot get behind all the annoyances that hinder our cooldowns. Combustion was good when it was primed with ignite, because you could unload in a window then do mechanics, like most melee DPS. However, with ignite being entirely trash and all of the movement required, I just do not understand how mage play is enjoyable…
Any tips?
Fire is by far the most mobile caster, and during combustion pretty much does not need to stand still at all (though you do need to stay within RoP which is a whole other topic). During the execute phases, Fire also has 100% mobility.
Last tier was definitely better to play. I dont like SKB playstyle at all, arcane is too RNG and frost is fun only in Dormazain.
And i’m not even talking about the damage, which is super low overall.
This tier wasn’t that ranged/caster friendly unless you played a Boomy. Even then most Boomies heavily rely on PI to maximize ramps.
The next tier looks somewhat similar. If it’s one of those long drawn out final fights with cutscenes, intermissions, etc. then Arcane/Fire will probably be the go-to for the fight.
Ultimately, the requirement of an int buff will always get a mage invited to a raid, at least. But beyond that their presence this tier was pretty minimal, until it didn’t matter and you could pull off any comp once everyone was geared. Most if not all the world 1st kills/groups just took 1 mage per serious fight.

This is my issue. If I am there just for AI, I would rather not be there. The exact reason I stopped raiding with my CE guild. It was just not enjoyable.
I dreaded raid nights and video games should do anything but give you anxiety.

100% this. While I love the social aspect of raiding with the same people for the past decade it eventually reaches a point where that isn’t enough to keep turning up week after week. The combination of specs not being overly fun, the raids being pretty average and feeling left behind because I don’t run 10 M+ a week means that I’m not having fun, and at the end of the day that is the only reason to play the game.

Well said sir/madam.
A video game should make me want to play. Not make me play.
You will always have a baseline player based because you were the first kid on the block. But you will never retain those that are okay with starting over, or that want a change. Unless you appeal to them.
Your current trash design will not do that. People do not want a job in a video game. Ironically enough. I do have friends that advocate for the current systems. But they are wildly out weighed by the people that resign because they just cannot be bothered or do not have the time.
Learn from your mistakes. Because you retain a baseline, does not mean the content is good or enjoyed.
