How important is holy shield when tanking only 5 mans. Level 60 5 mans
Yeah, you need to add that Holy damage on the mobs so they glue to you.
Threat was arguably more important than mitigation. Anything that generates extra threat is what you want.

it's not mandatory no - you can tank with Consecration, Retribution Aura and SoR/JoR - going 21 points into Prot for Blessing of Sanctuary helps as well but you certainly don't have to go 31+ to tank 5-10man dungeons
I'd say it depends on who you are running with. Friends, ideally including a reasonably skilled and/or geared healer? Random scrubs?
It also depends on your gear. Fully geared? Just starting out?
Especially if you are just starting out and running PUGs, you really don't want to pass up on all those juicy mitigation skills. In fact, if it was me in that situation I'd be paranoid and probably run something like this (13/31/7):

As my circle of friends and gear improved, I'd move some points out of mitigation and into damage/utility.
But, disclaimer: this is all theory on my part.

When I tanked I went holy/prot.
Holy shock was a really good *taunt* or range pull if I needed it.
I though it was more useful than holyshield.
But both specs can tank 5 mans.

It's not.
Holy Shield is great, but Holy Shock is much better. It gives a ton of threat, and can be used to initiate a pull--remember, you don't have a ranged weapon or a taunt, but Holy Shock can help with both these problems.
Experiment with both builds and see what works for you, but the few pally tanks in vanilla I knew, including myself, did the 31/20 build.

I don't find Holy Shield to be that good. It doesn't give enough block to make you crush immune. On single target fights you normally lose the buff before all of the charges are spent. On multiple target fights the charges get eaten really fast. If you do use it it has to be situational, cost too much mana to spam. I would only use rank 1 If I did use it. I only put 21 points into prot though and have no issues tanking.

I agree. I'd argue that 31 points in Holy is better than 31points in Protection.
That said, other than Strat UD will they allow Pally's to actually Tank well in Classic?
You really want skull flame shield, super OP for tanking dungeons
Not at all, you're not a warrior so you won't be tanking.

LOL oh look, a private server baby with zero clue what he is talking about. The OP specifically stated 5 mans, and paladins as well as druids could tank just fine. You did not play vanilla so STOP talking dude.

Since it seems like we're getting the 1.12 build then Pally's should be fine. That patch made Pally Tanks more viable. I wouldn't say they could Tank just fine before that however. Pally's were solid for Strat UD because of the obvious (Undead) but they always seemed to have mana issues.
In fact for our timed runs of Strat Undead we liked to use a Holy Pally Tank.
