I’ve healed with every class over the years except holy paladin. Now that I’m back in the game, I decided to level up a second paladin strictly for healing. Unlike other healers, holy paladin doesn’t have a bunch of HoTs or much AoE. I also am not a fan of holy power usage, honestly. Anyway, the class feels very, very busy. Maybe it’s because I’m newer to the spec, but running in. consecrate, crusader striking, clicking the tank(or anyone) to holy shock, judgement to filler than crusader striking until I can use word of glory is just, wow. It feels like a lot. Is this better than just standing in the back, shocking and holy/flash/glory healing? Holy power might regen a little slower but damn this class feels super busy. I’m determined to master it. Does anyone have any tips or can tell me if I need to change something I’m doing? Even if you have macros or helpful videos, that would be great too. Thanks.
Not to just fob off the question but ‘wings is up’ is a good site to check out. It will run you through the basics much better than I could on here.
Tldr though is yes it is that much better to be in melee than at range because you get so much more holy power and all our heals that don’t use holy power heal for hardly anything.
My only immediate advice is to make a mouseover macro for that and other heals, unless you already do, the wording may be throwing me off.

Get mouse over or frame healer addon like healbot
Wings is your main cd and dont be afraid to use it as you will almost insta heal anyone to full when its active.
Hpally mastery is you heal more the closer you are to ppl

In MoP it was much more sustainable and had solid mastery and offense abilities like Denounce. I’ve always stacked crit (not in a way that my other needed stats suffered) to buff my Holy Shock.
Currently, I use Divine Favor and keep it up so I’m less tempted to cast holy light and flash of light to preserve mana and use Word of Glory and Holy Shock to heal, when someone starts to drop I use flash of light, and if they aren’t going down fast, holy light.
When you pop your wings, heals are buffed, and using the Awakening talent helps you not waste Avenging Wrath’s CD. Saved by the light talent also helps give you more time to heal someone whos rapidly falling.
I don’t use offense abilities when I heal, only when everyone is safe. I heal mainly in PvP but I do just fine in PvE. Knowing which spells to cast and when Is important and easy to grasp when you practice it.
You learn from experience the best times to use your big CD’s and cast certain spells. I’m sorry I don’t have any macro’s or videos to help, but I hope my tips can offer you some aid with the spec. Good luck
Please don’t leave divine favor active if you aren’t using it, you have no dispel protection and any decent person will just instant purge and remove it immediately
You can preserve mana by using hammer of wrath as much as you can during wings and awakening proc. Hammer of wrath is always the first global i use when i get wings
I assume you’re running the judgment puts heal debuff on target talent, otherwise if you find it overwhelming you can hold off on using it as part of your rotation since it doesn’t generate any holy power and start using it off cd when you’re more comfortable
As others have said, absolutely get mouseover macros so that you don’t ever have to unselect the enemy npc. Itll make the dps into healing rotation 200% times smoother

I didn’t keep it up before because of the chance it would be purged but It never really happened. Plus when people are getting dropped around me I ALWAYS get interrupted. Keeping it up prevents that.
I use it this way too.
I guarantee it will start happening, hpal is already gimped you want to have the big heal available when it matters lol. Divine favor isnt on the gcd so you can use it right before casting fol or hl
If you’re getting interrupted a lot the Omnibar addon is great at tracking what kicks are down around you
It hurts me on a spiritual level to purge a divine favor thats just sitting there doing nothing when i’m on my disc and know the hpal now doesn’t have it for 30 seconds 
play at the beginning of the expansion, do pvp. win.

Thanks everyone for the tips and the macro suggestions! I really like the spec, it’s just a little more daunting than other classes. I’m so used to hanging in the back. I feel a little more confident in continuing to give it a try.

i use shift modifier for @focus heals and ctrl modifiers for at myself like for holy shock
What kinda content? our playstyle varies greatly from PvP to Mythic+ to Raids
Dungeons and raids primarily. I don’t PvP much aside from a little world defense.
