Holy Paladin noob questions

Hello I started playing Paladin coming from holy/ shadow priest. Here are my questions…

  1. Auras, I keep reading about auras but I only see one on my toon decrease dmg by 20% is there a way to switch auras?

  2. Weapons, what the heck should I wear? Is it one hand mace and Sheild, mace/offhand, two hand mace or sword and mace? I have no clue what holy paladins hold.

  3. I have a lot of different flash head type of spells with different cast times and mana drain, should I be using all of these? I don’t know their names off the top of my head I think there are 3

  4. How often should I use the spells that heal a lot but drain my vita? I think there are 2 of those? Also when do you cast lay hands, 10 min cool down??

classic or retail?

Alright so you pretty much asking…everything. so you are gonna get Soo many answers and trolls that it’s not even funny. But the most common one will tell you to go to icyveins and check the guides. They have gearing. Essences, talents, builds, etc.

  1. You can find the different auras on your level 60 talent row. There are 3: Devotion Aura, Aura of Sacrifice and Aura of Mercy. Generally speaking you will be running Devotion Aura which provides % damage decrease to anyone within the aura range and a 20% damage decrease in a 40 yard range for 8 secs when you hit your Aura Mastery ability.

  2. You will generally use a main hand/off hand combo. Shields are slightly better because you get a little more armor but any main hand/offhand combo that has better stats is fine. You can use a 2 hander but 2 handers with Intellect on them are rare at end game.

  3. You should be using all of your healing spells depending on circumstances and the build you choose. You can check out the Icy Veins guide for more detail but generally use Holy Shock on cd, use Light of Dawn as long as it will hit a group in front of you (it’s a cone aoe heal), use Flash of Light (bigger heal, more expensive) and Holy Light (smaller heal, less expensive) as needed.

  4. Use Light of the Martyr sparingly (because it drains your health) in circumstances where you are on the move, nothing else is available and/or it will keep someone alive. You use Lay on Hands to save someone’s life because it’s a big heal on a long CD and there’s no point wasting it unless someone is close to death.

  5. Free advice. Use your CDs regularly. Avenging Wrath, Blessing of Sacrifice, Lay on Hands, Blessing of Protection and Aura Mastery are all important and super useful so don’t save them up.

Sarakatewan covered it all but there is one error in there.

Flash of light is a smaller heal than holy light but on a shorter cast time and it uses more mana.

So in general you will be using holy light as your main hard cast spell and use flash of light when you need faster heals. Keep an eye on your mana bar as FoL will drain it.

1 just use devotion aura

2 equip anything with intellect, favor haste. Azerite traits, look for glimmer of light. No glimmer, no equip.

3 talent crusaders might. Holy shock on cd, crusader strike to reset holy shock cd. Light of dawn on cd if there is aoe to do. Holy light when holy shock procs. Flash of light if you need to save someone who is trying very hard to suicide.

4 remove hand of the martyr from your bars, the gcds are better spent crusader striking or being afk than killing yourself. All other cds try to use on cd. Lay on hands is a long cd, but it’s there to be used.

The 4th point here is wrong. Light of the martyr has its uses. In m+ it’s very useful, in raid it’s a lot more niche but if HS is on cd and you can’t spend a GCD on CS because someone might die then just throw an LotM first. Alternatively if CS/HS are both down and you can’t spend time casting FoL then you’d opt to use LoTM. It won’t be used often but it has a use in raid for sure.

Regardless, the best way for you to learn and get an answer to all of those questions is to check the WoWhead/icy veins Holy paladin guide. The Paladin discord is also a great resource with multiple guides/sites to use. Check the guides first as they’ll answer all of the basic questions you’ll have.
