Holy Paladin 2-handers in vault rewards, but cannot use them because we cannot use shield of the righteous

I just opened my vault as a Paladin with Holy specialization selected. My 447 item is a 2-handed mace with Intellect and Stamina on it.

As much as I would love to take this item, I cannot. My specialization has an ability called “Shield of the Righteous” where, you guessed it, I am required to use a shield in order to use this ability. This is not an optional ability, this is not something I chose in my talent specialization. This is a baseline ability that is my only damage spender for Holy Power.

Additionally, the Intellect stat on this item is not re-written to Strength when I change specializations to Retribution.

Why is this item one of the loot options for Holy specialization when taking this item and using it locks me out of the only option I have to spend my Holy Power for damage? There is no option to change this ability for something else that I can use while wielding a 2-hander.

This is an incredibly frustrating experience, as items that can be upgraded to 447 are only available via the weekly vault reward or from Mythic Raid difficulty, meaning that there are a limited number of times I can earn one of these pieces of gear. This goes beyond the point of just being a “sub-optimal choice” where the secondary stats on an item are undesirable or the trinket effect isn’t useful for your class. This is, effectively, a dead item that the game has presented me for my effort throughout the week. An item that, should I choose it, will offer me a negative amount of value for my class and specialization.

Please consider addressing this by either removing 2-handed weapons with Intellect and Stamina from Holy paladin drop tables, or by giving us a different holy power spending ability that does not require shields to use.

if theyre going to have these 2h weapons they should just remove the shield requirement of SoTR. We summon holy hammers already, how is the shield any different.

Makes me think they should just make Templar’s verdict Baseline outside of Prot Spec.
while making it cast a more healer oriented version of Divine Storm(or just plainly replace it with DS) and call it Divine Retribution?
cause these 2h’s dropping for Hpal is a tad bumpkus.

Yeah I mean I mog mine into a 2 hander anyhow lol. They should just rename sotr strike of the righteous for holy and allow 1 or 2 hand. I don’t see the harm at all.

Why would a holy paladin be using Shield of the Righteous? I guess if you’re meleeing, it might be a good idea, but it’s not a vital spell for holy. I only put it on my action bar if I am playing protection.

Sotr is huge in mythic+ especially in higher keys. This ability is one of our only sources of aoe damage on trash pulls. Every bit of damage we can put out means mobs die faster and don’t dish as much group damage and it also means better chances at timing keys.

Because it is massively powerful.

Was just thinking this the other day when I got the 2h out of the mega dungeon. A lesser DS would be pretty awesome or like some people before me suggested a templar verdict baseline. Either way I do enjoy 2h healing weps but for sure give us something to use it with ha

Very very strongly agree. No need to remove 2h int weapons from holy paladins. Just remove shield requirement from SotR and make it Strike of the Righteous or something.

When you are not healing you should be dpsing…

There are lots of times in PVE where there is nothing to heal. The best choice is to not afk but dps.
