I am currently trying to learn holy pally to see if I want to switch for season 2 for something different. I am normally a shaman, monk, druid in that order.
Just reading guides and getting my vuhdo bars figured out, is there a good time to cast holy light? From what I am reading all my procs should be used on flash of light or judgement. Holy light is mana expensive and slow.
Seems like flash of light and word of glory are essientially going to make up my single target heals outside of holy shocks. I am feeling a bit of button bloat with all my protections and would love to free up a button
I think the official guidance is Holy Light with an Infusion proc + Divine Favor if you need the healing output and can afford the mana expenditure.
Flash of Light is essentially the faster, less healing and basically free alternative with an infusion if you have Inflorescence of the Sunwell.
Judgment is the default, passive way to consume Infusions.
It really depends on the build you’re playing. But that’s my understanding of the FoL v Holy Light equation.
I really only cast holy light or flash if I’m out of combat and need to heal for some reason. I don’t honestly think the talent point for favor is even worth taking. This is as LS. I don’t really play herald so maybe it’s different.

This is written under the context of lightsmith. May apply to Herald, but not sure.
In M+ content, I only use flash of light to consume procs of infusion to reduce armament cooldown. I also only do this either first 3 seconds of a pull, or last 3 seconds of a pull. Nowhere in between do I ever use Flash or Holy light. I am already starved of GCD timing. No chance I cast a spell no matter the cast time. Quite frankly in M+ I am always casting somekind of ability anyways in more core rotation. I rarely (less than 5%) have downtime where I need to fill.
In raid, its a little different. Damage patterns are extremely predictable. So queing up a Holy Light into a damage burst may be okay. Problem is, mana. Depending on what content your running it may not be worth it. Two examples of this is sniping the phase lung on sikran with a Holy Light into WoG. Another is sniping Feast on Queen with Holy light into WoG into judgement, WoG, Divine Toll, WoG, WoG. Just spam tf out of WoG.
Paladins can be played as casters, but it’s specific and needs to be built around that style. Unless you specifically are trying to achieve that, the answer is you likely should never cast Holy or Flash of light. Judgement consumes the same proc, and is way more valuable due to other talents as LS.
This may vary in Herald since its not as focused on AC uptime. Greater Judgement, and melee output to heal. It also may vary due to how infusion works for Herald. But on Lightsmith I have found my judgement plus an occasional Flash of Light “dump” (overheal/waste) is plenty enough to benefit from the CDR on armaments you get by consuming Infusions.
Hope this helps. This is just my experience. I am still pushing 12 keys and mythic raid so not sure if its the most optimal advice but I have found it works for me.
I pretty much never cast flash of light except once in awhile in m+. Parses are all 80+, averaging 97 for ilvl parse. Holy light ftw it move bars unlike fol
Ook ook Holy Light crits for 3mil, tickles brain, me likey.
Flash of Light just feels like a wet noodle of a heal. Its very cheap, but just doesn’t compare to the healing of Holy Light, Holy Shock or Eternal Flame. Why spend mana+a global to heal a little when I could dps until they fall lower and get an efficient cast off?
Exactly. Thats why i pretty much only fol rarely in m+ when everybody is topped off and crusader strike, judgement and holy shock are on cd then i only fol to get the 1 hp and keep my rotation going. So almost never
