I remember when holidays where super cool and fun events with loads of stuff to do in each events, part of me wishes they would make a raid of new dungeon for each holiday but I know that would take lots of man power
Guild Wars 2 does holidays, why not WoW?
??? WoW does do holidays. They simply don’t change any of the content (except for occasionally adding something new to the holiday shop).
I agree with the OP though, that WoW holidays are pretty boring. Personally, I like how FFXIV handles them - the same holidays every year BUT there’s a new mini questline and year-unique rewards which can only be obtained by completing the specific year’s event.
Unpopular opinion: I dislike holiday events in my MMOs, especially in non-Earth settings, especially where these mirror RL holidays.
I don’t mind special events in-game. I mind Hallowe’en, Thankgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s etc. in game under a thin veneer of fantasy-ness.
Make something we don’t have here at all, or leave it out.
Darn, some of the new alliance towns in BFA would look so cool with Winter Veil decorations. I wouldn’t want to have to decorate those pyramids over there on Zandalar though.
You will be visited by three ghosts on Winter’s Veil eve.
Oh, I am not asking for them to be taken out, and when I say “unpopular opinion” I am trying to acknowledge that others do enjoy them, and should feel free to. I just get an aesthetic pang from the real life intrusion.
I will in fact be reading A Christmas Carol aloud with my family though - something we do together every year.
They’re just an excuse to grow the -censored- microtransaction shop in that game. I missed the really nice Santa costume from the 2015 holiday and now guess where I need to go to get it… In a pay-to-play game this not acceptable. I mean I like FF but this is BS. I hope Blizzard does NOT do that.
I firmly believe that Blizzard has done very well with the Holiday content. And to not take it any further than they have is also understandable. You don’t want a new player or new character to overwhelmed with a towering mountain of things to do when Christmas (etc) come around. So to not make too many additions to the already existing seasonal content is a good move, I feel. They are exactly what seasonal content should be and that’s maybe half a day of game time’s worth of entertainment (I don’t know the exact amount of hours). Also we have seasonal content like the Headless Horseman in which you can, once per character per day, slay him in his dungeon for a chance at his mount to drop. That little niche of repeatable seasonal content is very nice. I must say, I’ve been playing this game since it’s induction and I still haven’t seen the Headless Horseman mount. :’(
A what now?
Maybe I’m just feeling the Christmas blues oh well
I completely agreee with you, especially because the DEVs could get really creative on this since these in-game holidays would not tied to RL festivities and they can be put in on any day of the calendar.
I don’t really see that as a problem, tbh. If you want it so badly that you’re willing to spend IRL money on it, then you do so. Otherwise, you don’t.
The FFXIV shop, while somewhat more extensive in terms of content than WoW’s shop, is effectively no different - it sells otherwise unobtainable in-game cosmetic items, as well as player services, for real world currency.
I would rather have that model, and therefore an incentive to actually participate in the holiday every year, than WoW’s current model of “here’s the same content and rewards every year” that doesn’t give me an incentive to go back in subsequent years once I’ve gotten the handful of things I’m interested in.
Sorry but the WoW traditions follow Samhain and Yule.
I actually like the holidays, because it gives me a chance to celebrate them in a near-Pagan light… rather than the fake commercialized holidays IRL.
Thanksgiving and V-Day are virtually unchanged, though.
I doubt they would make a new raid or dungeon for each holiday, considering how few they have been adding over the course of each expansion for the last several expansions.
But I think it would be a good idea if they just updated them a bit. Perhaps change some of the rewards, add costume contests, secret santas, things along those lines.
