So I’ve been playing for a few days, I’ve made a human female mage and just played a lot. I’ve gone through a few quests but I’ve mostly done dungeons to level up… The problem is I have literally no idea what to do though. I don’t know what professions are, how to get gold or what to do with that gold. Is there any in-depth guide to WoW that anyone knows because I can’t find one…?
wowhead.com has everything wow related.
If your gonna gather, I would only gather from 110-120. That said, you don’t need professions and there is an opportunity cost to them.
Example. you have mining and herbalism and your picking up every herb and ore as you quest from 86-120. These are not exact numbers, but let’s say you sell all that ore and herbs you gathered for 4000 gold.
However, that gathering from 86-120 delayed you hitting max level by 2 hours. Let’s say at level 120 you can make 4000 gold in 2 hours just playing normal content, dungeons, raids, world quests, emmisaries, story quests, islands, warfronts, etc. you’ll make a lot of gold at 120 don’t worry about it now.
The end result is the gathering didn’t make you any extra gold for your two hours, and you delayed your character progression by two hours with no reward.
In sum, I don’t think professions are worth it for most people because anytime spent is time your not progressing and gearing your character or leveling others…and you are missing out on gold from all the character progression content. I only gather while leveling during the first few weeks of a new expansion.
I would quest in the zones while your waiting in dungeon queues. MOP 85-90 and especially WOD 90-100 zones are fast and enjoyable questing.
In Legion from 100-110, questing used to be alot faster than dungeons not sure if that changed. Make sure you do khadgars quests and get all your artifact weapons through the class hall quests. I would also do legion invasions they are super great exp…google “legion invasion timer” to see when they happen.
Lastly, read the icy veins mage class guides and learn how to play all the specs while leveling. There are also thousands of good you tube videos on everything wow related.
thanks, i’ll take a look at that
Id offset Ana’s numbers by the fact that both mining and Herbalism give XP for farming nodes so the leveling delay isn’t quite that long.
Personally, not having any profession when you can have mining and herbalism is like walking away without bothering to stoop down to pick up $5 laying on the ground.
Nok you caught me forgetting about that node exp again! but those nickels on the ground are not free money. Let’s say that gathering from 86-120 delayed you getting to max by only 1 hour.
In that 1 hour, you could have run a couple old raids to get mounts, mogs, and gold. Maybe you run world quests for an hour to get gold, gear, AP, resources, etc. Maybe you missed some gear world quest timers with the 1 hour delay. A gold emmisary quest gets you 2000 gold in 15 minutes.
The bottom line is any gold you make gathering from 86-120 is fairly insignificant if it delays you hitting max level by 1 hour. Disclosure: these are not exact numbers I’m just pointing out there are opportunity costs.
I haven’t checked the AH mats in awhile, but 110-120 herbs and ore were worth more than sub 110.
The game isn’t a race to 120. Quest. Explore. Interact with things. Expect to go slow. Wow is a fine scotch you sip, not a cheap beer you blast.
2 additional hours, 200 additional hours, 2000000000000 additional hours, whatever, if you enjoy the process, it’s time well spent.
And if you’re not enjoying yourself, do something else.
Personally I would suggest you try everything you can while leveling up. If this makes you take longer to get to 120, so what?
Yes, read up on professions and ignore any advice on what’s practical or makes gold. Pick the one that seems fun. Make a couple of items but don’t expect anything from it. Pick up the secondary professions like fishing and archaeology and try them out. They are time sinks.
Don’t worry about making gold. Newbies don’t make any gold. Don’t stress over it. The guys making tons of gold in wow are doing it by playing the AH: buy low, sell high.
Read a lot on wowhead … this is my first advice.
WOW is like a real life… you enjoy things a long the way. You do not ask yourself about the purpose of living this life everyday. So, you do the same thing in WOW. You don’t worry if you going the right or wrong direction.
It will be all over the place for months. But if you have one questioned… you start looking online answer. And if you do this everytime… you will have a clearer picture on where are you now and where should you be.
Do not worry about it too much!!
