In Blizzard’s recent post they said:
“As far as we know, every one of the first Ragnaros kills was only possible due to a bug that made Lava Burst temporarily stop firing after a wipe.”
This implies that the first Ragnanros kills would have been impossible had it of not been for this Lava Burst bug.
Otherwise, why would they have said “only possible”?
Do you guys agree with how I’m reading this? And does anyone have any details on the history of Ragnaros? If and when he was nerfed/buffed?
As far as I remember (obviously a long time ago), my guild defeated Rag on June 6, 2005 and there was a change to Rag that was going to happen the day after. I can’t recall the exact change but I remember something about it.
I only agree that Blizzard’s wording is wrong.
I don’t believe that if the encounter was working correctly, that no one would kill Ragnaros. I only believe that it would take a little while longer.
Cheater, please share why you feel this way. Is it because you have a personal memory of this encounter in 2005 or because you haven’t read, or heard any discussion pertaining to this “lava burst bug”? Or another reason entirely?
My gut tells me you are right… but that’s all I got to back it up.
Could Bliz be right? And the chatter on this just never became a thing?
There are countless times throughout history that a boss was so overtuned that it was impossible to kill the boss without hitting enrage or because a specific ability was too powerful to handle with the gear available. This was probably one of those times.
Without someone doing the math publicly, we may never know. Maybe Blizzard did the math, and didn’t share. But I suspect they really meant to say, “As far as we know, every one of the first Ragnaros kills happened to succeed due to a bug that made Lava Burst temporarily stop firing after a wipe.”
I’m not really sure what bug it refers to either.
Guilds were trying all kinds of things to deal with the sons and the melee knockback. Some of which could definitely be called “clever use of game mechanics” cough bugs to their advantage.
Its been a while so my memory might be off, but I do recall some mechanic stopping you from entering the room again as a raid after a wipe. It may have been the lava splash, may have been his 1 shot mechanic started as soon as you entered the spiral room.
Basically you had 1 shot at rag per week. If you wiped it was pretty much impossible to get your raid back into the room and set up again, domo didn’t re-spawn at that point so there was no way to reset the encounter.
So, I just found this:
From Patch 1.5 June 7th 2005.
- The eruptions from the lava in Ragnaros’s Lair will now always happen while Ragnaros is in combat. However, these lava eruptions occur less frequently, do less damage, and the damage they inflict is now resistible.
Would definitely make the encounter easier.

A guild in the EU found out that Majordomo respawned after 12 hours and he could be killed again, spawning Ragnaros. You guessed it, they killed him all week and their items were’t removed when caught either.
Blizzard probably made a few different hotfixes here and there to stop shenanigans.
They’ve made a lot of changes over the two years.
What they said was that all the Rags kills were after the first wipe, during the period where his lava burst wasn’t active. No-one killed Rags without one wipe first.
Objectively true. And also a bug.
