Hispanic representation

Does WoW have a playable race that is associated with Hispanic culture?

The Zandalari city has a “Mayan” feel, but I don’t feel like the characters themselves have hispanic ties.

Playable characters have such interesting cultures that sometimes connect with real world cultures. I understand not every culture can be represented.

But why doesn’t Blizzard make a playable race with Hispanic culture?

I feel like several races inhabit hispanic-esque culture. Tauren being one of them.

I hadn’t thought of that. I always felt Taurens were more Native American. Would you provide some examples?

Aren’t modern day hispanics just descendants of Spainards and Native americans? Also a brief google shows that Mayans are in fact considered hispanic.

But failing that, is there any specific hispanic culture you’re looking for? Because there is a distinct difference between Honduran, Mexican, Chilean, Brazilian, cultures. In some cases night and day.

Eh, not really. Tauren are more “native American” or “indian” than Hispanic

There really isn’t any Hispanic representation, Zandalari “Mayan” theme is the closest it gets - but even that isn’t good enough imo. To me the whole Zandalari thing seems like a weird blend of “Wakanda” + Mayan culture instead of something Hispanic you can actually relate to from real-life

Since we’re on this topic of racial representation, it’s the year 2023 and there is still no Black culture/Black representation in the game :flushed:

Asian/Chinese culture got a whole expansion dedicated to it (Mists of Pandaria), but so far they’ve never added something for Black and Hispanic players

So so far it’s “only” White people culture and Asian culture that have been represented in the game, doesn’t seem like a very good track record since the game is almost 20 years old

Zandalars have well built Aztec looking temples. That is about all I can think of off the top of my head. Or the guy above me said Mayan. It might be that actually.

What do you consider Wakanda Culture?

Trolls have been in the game since day one.

I imagine the developers take the demographics of their paying subscriber base into consideration.

See I disagree with this, a lot of the troll themes seem to pull from all over the world, some from africa, some from mayan. Feels like a mixed bag. Maybe not overtly directly 1:1 ratio sure, but are there any in WoW that are like that? Maybe white medieval with stormwind I suppose

I’m Mexican and I want a Chihuahua race that wears little sombreros. I’d settle for a battle pet though :joy:

There are some Hispanic and Mexican influences, though I wouldn’t argue against more.

  • Day of the Dead (Macabre marionette battle pet, orange marigold, candy skulls, etc.)
  • The Zandalari trolls definitely have some Aztec/Mayan influences.
  • I think there may also be pinatas.

There could be more. That’s just what I can think of off the top of my head.

Though I love the Macabre Marionette and its tiny maracas.

There was a pinata toy from the TCG, which was the only thing I ever won from that. It’ll probably show up on the trading post or as a Twitch drop. After you eat the gum that drops from it, you blow pink bubbles for a while.

so you want Vulpera?

A little off-topic, but doesn’t anyone find it funny how Zandalari have both Latin American and African influences? They were like “oopsie! mixed up the brown people.”

Not saying it’s a bad thing or problematic or anything. Just think it’s funny

Those are foxes. Not my favorite dog breed

I’ve always hated this idea that “Representation Matters” in a video game, when it really doesn’t, more so for any nationality, race, culture, or ethnic groups. Every playable race we have so far has taken inspiration from a nationality, race, culture, or ethnic group but it wasn’t done for the sake of representation, and that’s the way it should be.

Video game representation shouldn’t be used as a checkbox like it’s used in most media, especially in a fantasy game. Now if somewhere down the line Blizzard decides to create a race that takes inspiration from Spanish, Hispanic, Mesoamerica, or South American cultures, that would be fine, especially if it’s done organically.
