High World Ping Spikes, unable to activate abilities but able to use chat

Hello,
I’m writing this forum post on behalf of a friend whom I play WoW with frequently. He’s having a serious issue which is making the game unplayable.

As of yesterday, we will be in the middle of a key or questing out in the world, and his world ms will spike to over 2,000ms, but his home latency is 100ms. When this happens, he’s unable to activate any class abilities, he’s not able to accept or complete quests, but he can interact with various NPCs, while this is happening he is able to read and say things in all chat types from in game /say, party chat, blizzard whispers, and trade chat. He can also open in-game menus i.e. class window, reputation, etc., he can’t add or remove any gear though.

Note: Sometimes during these lag spikes his world ms doesn’t jump up, and stays around 100ms.

Sometimes they go away by themselves after a few seconds, other times they last longer, the confusing part is that it doesn’t seem to be his internet causing the problem.

The cause of this issue is unknown, we had originally thought it was his internet, but his Discord connection is totally normal and his home ms hasn’t been spiking up at all, and his browsers work fine.

These strange lag spikes last anywhere from 5 seconds to 2 minutes, potentially more but he usually restarts the game to temporarily fix the issue. This is a huge problem while pushing keys as we’re on a timer lol.

So far we have tried:

  • removing all addons
  • restarting router
  • updating windows
  • restarting computer
  • running internet speedtests (results normal)
  • restarting the client as well as blizzard launcher
  • changing from automatic to google DNS
  • updating drivers
  • closing all background applications
  • removing antivirus software
  • running windows security scans (clean)
  • setting WoW to high priority in task manager
  • playing without Discord running
  • disabling the TSM desktop application
  • scanning game files
  • reinstalling WoW

We are both on Stormrage, and it happens when we’re doing content in the same phase where my world/home ms is sitting at a normal 62ms|62ms.

The issue started yesterday when we were starting to gear up our monk alts, he’s playing brewmaster, he says that the same problem occurs when he’s on his other characters as well now- after yesterday.

After 2 days playing normal , starts again on classic Pagle, righ now, about 15 minuts

So… he died during a boss fight and on his screen the boss was still alive, it’d turn to face him and everything, on our side his dead body was just FLOPPING AND JUMPING AROUND.

??? what is happening lmao

Hey Vertically,

Based on what you’re describing it sounds like your friend’s internet provider is having issues staying properly connected to the WoW servers. In WoW there are multiple connections going at the same time, known as Home and World. Home is responsible mainly for chat, while World is responsible for updating character position, abilitiesm, and other players or NPCs/enemy positions just to name a few. In the case you’re describing it sounds like your friend is maintaining a good Home connection but the World connection (which transmits MUCH more data overall) is unstable or dropping out almost completely.

This is very likely just an issue somewhere in the connection route between your friend’s modem and the WoW servers. Other applications would seem to be unaffected by this since a) other applications use the connection differently and b) each application has its own server locations that would not be the same as WoW.

If you can get your friend to run a WinMTR test that would be the most helpful in identifying where the issue lies, as long as it is shows up in the WinMTR test (in some cases it doesn’t).

For Stormrage use the US Central IP: 24.105.62.129

Ultimately this is very likely going to need to be looked at by his/her internet provider for a resolution, and it may just be a side effect of the increased internet traffic going on across the entire internet right now due to what is going on in the world. We are happy to take a look at the WinMTR though to try and help determine where the problem is occurring.

Hey Jambrix, thanks for the timely reply.

The WinMTR tests are as follows:

In all possibility it could be high traffic due to the quarantine right now, especially due to the fact that he lives outside of the city.

So the WinMTR looks fine and doesn’t show any issues, but I can see that it was only run for about 46 seconds. Did he experience the issue in those 46 seconds that the test was running for?

Ideally he would want to start the WinMTR test and leave it running in the background while playing WoW, then after the problem occurs just tab out and stop the test.

This start today on Classic server too , about 2 hours ago , the last 2 days are fine till now !

The WinMTR test was taken right before a spike, then when it ended he stopped the test, I’ll have him run it for longer soon.

Sounds good, thanks Vertically. Replying so you can add new results whenever you get them.

Ran for about 10-11 minutes

WinMTR v0.92 GPL V2 by Appnor MSP - Fully Managed Hosting & Cloud Provider

I’m am the recipient of the lag spikes, me and vertically believe it is most likely a problem with my ISP not being able to cope with the extreme influx of traffic and activity because of our nation-wide quarantine. I recorded multiple clips within the lag spike tested in vert’s previous post. the lag spike went on for about 10 minutes before i closed down WoW.

It happens to him on Stormrage and Arthas which is kinda odd. He gets the same lag problems when he’s using his hotspot which leads us to believe that it’s not an ISP issue anymore.

I have also been having this issue a lot lately, and I play using only the hotspot off of my phone.

It’d be pretty cash money if we could figure out how to fix this; though if it is a big of some sort I could only begin to imagine what a pain it’d be to try and figure out the source of the issue, let alone rectify it.

This new WinMTR shows a latency spike right on the 2nd hop which would be 75.153.170.244
It’s possible the issue is occurring there, since that would affect the entire rest of the path to the server.

When the hotspot was tried was the wifi on the mobile device disabled? If not the hotspot may have used the home wifi instead of mobile data, so the issue may have still occurred.

It looks like you’re both on different internet providers in the same city, so you probably don’t share that same 2nd hop. So yeah it could definitely be due to the increased internet traffic now that everyone is staying indoors, especially if it just started happening without him changing anything on his end.

Was there a fix found for this issue? Been happening for 2 weeks now.
